James
I am the Network Engineer working for Mark Baumann at Indianola School. We spoke on the phone about configuring this setup and you asked me to post about the results. It work just as planned, I called Onenet and got three public IP addresses and configured them in the following fashion:

Public IP 1 - Untrust Interface of the firewall
Public IP 2 - Teacher Subnet
Public IP 3 - Student Subnet

I had to configure what Juniper calls a DIP, it was very simple once I understood the mechanics of the DIP

Gary Guthrie
NetPro, Inc.

Hi, my name is James Sears and I am the Technical Director for the Eldorado Independent School District. Some of you may already know that Eldorado is a very small rural town in extreme SW Oklahoma. The school district consist of one main building that houses 1st through 12th grade. The Pre-K and K are in a separate building on the same property. We have about 110 to 120 students. Our network is extremely simple consisting of only 2 hardware firewalls that are used as my DNS servers. This may seem a bit unorthodoxed as a proxy / DNS server would be ideal, but with rural district funds being very scarce, it was the only solution. Hardware firewalls are extremely cheap compared to the price of a new computer. Let me explain: Teachers and students here have different requirements. I let teachers have more access to areas then students. So the filtering schemes for both are different. Setting up OpenDNS with 2 separate IP's allowed the most flexibility for us and yet not compromise the network in any way. Basically, I have both firewalls set up to use OpenDNS as a forwarder. I then use the OpenDNS blacklist and whitelist features to set up each separate network as needed. Students are extremely filtered (no social networking, adult, streaming videos, even shopping, etc.). Teachers, on the other hand may need access to outside email sites such as yahoo and hotmail. If we get more funds, I would set it up differently, but for now, this works extremely well for what we need.

So, for very little cost in hardware and no cost for filtering, OpenDNS is the way to go.

If you have any questions regarding this setup, need help in setting up your system or have suggestions, just ask.

Thanks and Welcome!

James Sears
Technical Director
Eldorado Public Schools
