The OpenDNS service is not stats tracking any and blocking only a few websites with the Exede service. The modem is the surfbeam 2 that is used for this service. If there is a workaround please advise. Another thing is that I would like keyword blocking not just domain name blocking on the customization page so that I can prevent terms that bypass via searching. IE terms used from the URBAN dictionary that also mean sex and other such terms and searches. Either via keyword or such ways to find pornography or nudity. I also need another way to find out searches that may not be blocked as teenagers are getting smarter at finding ways around blocks. One of these days someone may invent a way to prescan content prior to it being viewed by a user.

Is it really true you can not use OpenDNS with Hughes.net? I ask because I keep configuring over and over with the instructions listed for configuring and every configurations is correct--yet every time I try to have OpenDNS tested on this site, I keep getting an error that says I don't have OpenDNS yet and to go back and reconfigure again. I just happen to read another poster having a problem with Hughes.net and that brought me to this question.
Thanks in advance for your advice,
Gyspy63

I have HughesNet internet and a NetGear router. I tried running the Netgear setup disc which had software for openDNS but the CD did not work with windows 7. Open DNS has not been working well with me. I'm not sure why. When I first set it up it takes a looong while before the filtering starts and when it does it is a pain. I had it set on low (mainly just to block porn) and it even blocks openDNS website. I couldn't even login. Also it blocks google, yahoo.com, and my hughesNet home page. Is that normal? I added these sites to my whitelist but it does no good. Still blocked. I am really burned out on trying to configure it right now but I think I may have messed something up alittle. The page that I go to, to show my bandwidth usage is not show my usage anymore. It stopped two days ago. I don't know if it's a difficulty with their site or something I did. Any ideas? How would I go about fixing it. If I had to just start over and setup my router again how would I do that? So that I could apply all fresh settings again? I don't think the router is actually installed on the computer...

You can use OpenDNS with HughesNET DW**** Modems

You can actually use OpenDNS with HughesNET DW**** Modems. I have a Perl script that will ftp to your modem and reconfigure it so the TurboPage and DNS Cache features are disabled. This allows OpenDNS to work, I have found it's actually a smoother connection once using the OpenDNS servers. This script works using Perl, tested with a Linux computer but should run on Windows too using Perl(www.activeperl.com). This seems like the only way to use OpenDNS with HughesNET, I've been using it for over a week and very happy :). It runs like this, ftp_dw7000.pl -s 192.168.0.1 -u USERNAME -p PASSWORD -t off, you can run it first with ftp_dw7000.pl --help, that will give a URL to a forum on dslreports showing the username/password to use since that's needed to access the modem config and change it (I'm not providing the secret username/password but it's available out on the Internet from the URL the help output shows ;) ). Not for the weak at heart, it's for advanced users, also a good documentation to show basically the process I had to figure out to change the config, and the script automates that process so as safe as it can but, but definitely a danger when changing the modems config so I wrote the Perl script to keep that danger as minimal as possible (but you are WARNED, know what you are doing !!!, it's for the users that are brave and are really wanting to use OpenDNS).

Here's a link to download the Perl Script, a zip file, unzip and use Perl to test it out...

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r19020086-

Thanks,
BitByteBit
