Good news!

Netgear has released firmware for more routers that support Live Parental Controls powered by OpenDNS.

Initial release
* Wireless-N 300 Router, WNR2000
Added 9/17/2009
* Wireless-N 150 Router, WNR1000
* Wireless-N 300 Router with DSL Modem, DGN2000
* RangeMax Wireless-N Gigabit Router, WNR3500 v2
(please note: it is important that the WNR3500 be a v2 model)

I will continue to update this list as more of the Wireless-N routers are released.

Information from my previous post:

There are some feature differences you should be aware of if switching to Live Parental Controls (LPC) from our core OpenDNS service:
* Using LPC eliminates the need for a dynamic IP update client using a new "Device ID". The router itself defines the network.
* Bypass accounts - allows you to associate a Windows computer with a sub-account that has different filtering settings than the default/all network users.
* Time based blocking - pretty self explanatory. This allows you to have different filtering rules based on local time
* All DNS queries from behind the router will be routed to the OpenDNS/LPC server even if the computer is explicitly set to use a different DNS server.
* LPC does not have statistics
* LPC will allow you to use your OpenDNS login but will not use any of the settings you currently have
* A separate dashboard has been created at http://netgear.opendns.com - if you have a NETGEAR router you will notice a link from the OpenDNS dashboard to the NETGEAR router specific dashboard

Notes: currently the setup requires a Windows computer.

Site with downloads:
http://netgear.com/lpc

Press release:
http://bit.ly/1NcTh9

When a site won't load, retrying immediately generally doesn't help, but if when come back later it's fine. This is about to be a dealbreaker for me. Any ideas on how to fix this?

thanks Carol

 I bought a DGN2000 modem/router to try and control my kids' access to time wasters when they're supposed to be doing their homework.

I have a problem with the "Windows only" aspect of LPC. We have a mixture of devices at home, including 3 x Windows PCs, 2 x Macs, and 2 x iPod Touches. The bypass accounts work just fine on the Windows machines, but there is no client software for the Mac and iPods. That means that either:

- The default settings need to be less secure, if the Macs and iPods are to access time wasters (such as Facebook etc.) at all. This means then that for Windows users, the bypass feature is redundant, as the bypass cannot increase the security, only reduce it.

or

- more secure default settings with useful bypasses for Windows users means that the Macs and iPods never get to access the time wasters, which is a bit mean spirited, as they're fun at the right times.

Can the router handle multiple OpenDNS accounts, so that non-Windows devices can log in separately to OpenDNS, and have their own bypass settings?

Could the router conceivably map MAC addresses on the network to OpenDNS bypass accounts? This would eliminate the need for client software on the client devices, as they all have unique MAC addresses.

Paul

I've never had this problem before. Any ideas? I'm using XP Home SP-3 with a Westell 7500 modem/router provided by my DSL ISP (Verizon).

I wanted to find something out though, the school I do contract work loves it as well and is considering buying the version that's $10.00 a year. With this version or even the basic version is there a way to view who tried to access which site thus being blocked by the content filtering? I have searched around and didn't think there was a way to perform this task. If there is I would love to find out!

-K

 OK so I see that several people have chimed in on this topic prior, but I was hoping the get some clarification. I use Trillian to connect to my AOL, MSN Messenger, ICQ, and Yahoo accounts. we have CHAT and WEBMAIL being blocked on our domain so I had to enable "never block" for the icq and aol, which both work. I cant seem to get the Yahoo and MSN Messenger (not LIVE messenger) working. I opened the following domains and still cannot connect on YM and MSN. Any suggestions other than opening all of yahoo.com and other domains?

messenger.hotmail.com
messenger.yahoo.com
hotmail.com
msg.edit.yahoo.com
mcs.msg.yahoo.com

 Hi, having a bit of an issue with the stats feature of OpenDNS:

We definitely have a static IP. The static IP has been successfully added to the OpenDNS system. We use OSX 10.6 Server Open Directory for student access, and utilize OpenDNS as a forwarder for all requests that our local machine is not authoritative for. Random tests of machines report that OpenDNS is being used correctly per https://store.opendns.com/settings/, yet no stats are being displayed. Am I missing something?

Thanks,

Russ

What if I configure the LAN to use OpenDNS in this case?

 You see, the situation in my particular case is the following: I have my single desktop PC for years (which was using a dial-up connection), and like half a year ago or so I got my Dell Mini 9 netbook. Then soon after buying the netbook I also bought a UTP crossover cable and connected my Dell Mini with my desktop PC.

The Dell netbook came together in a "package" with HSDPA connection (i.e. my mobile phone operator's connection named "Vodafone Mobile Connect", which uses "Dell Wireless 5530 HSDPA Mobile Broadband Minicard Modem"). And so I am always connecting directly to the Internet with netbook's HSDPA connection; I wrote always because that means that I'm connecting with its HSDPA connection when I am using netbook (well of course), and similarly when I am connected to the Internet with the desktop PC (which netword card is, as mentioned, connected to netbook's netword card with a UTP cable), that is, connected through the netbook.

Further, although I cannot configure the Dell netbook itself to use OpenDNS because some "Vodafone Mobile Connect" program (named identically to connection) always resets the DNS servers back to default ISP's, I can configure LAN Properties on the desktop PC to use OpenDNS, and so I am successfully using it for the last few months.

Now, all this above was just an introduction (explaining my specific situation), while my question begins here. What would happen (if anything at all) if I would configure the LAN Properties (not to be confused with actual "Vodafone Mobile Connect" connection that's used to connect to Internet) on the netbook to use OpenDNS's nameservers. Note that when I opened the LAN Properties and went to "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" settings, I noticed that actually "Use the following DNS server addresses" option was checked (but input-fields were empty), and not "Obtain DNS server address automatically" as I expected (though when it was currently in use, so maybe this is the reason why).

P.S. - For reference, see this: http://forums.opendns.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=4489 discussion for more info on why netbook cannot be successfully configured to use OpenDNS if you're interested.

Thanks in advance, Tadej from Slovenia

 Is there any way with the OpenDNS stats page to view which IP address went where? Just in case I have set my Airport Extreme for DHCP reservations for the people that connect to the network. Will that type of information show up in the stats where I can choose from the unique ip's that are using my network or is this not at all possible. Maybe I didn't explain clearly enough...let me know! Thanks!
