Is it really true you can not use OpenDNS with Hughes.net? I ask because I keep configuring over and over with the instructions listed for configuring and every configurations is correct--yet every time I try to have OpenDNS tested on this site, I keep getting an error that says I don't have OpenDNS yet and to go back and reconfigure again. I just happen to read another poster having a problem with Hughes.net and that brought me to this question.
Thanks in advance for your advice,
Gyspy63

Even if you could successfully configure your connection to use OpenDNS, it probably is not advisable. Satellite ISPs use lots of special caching and stuff to keep your browsing experience as responsive as possible. Your DNS lookups may go to Hughes' DNS or proxy servers no matter what you configure.

The only way to be absolutely certain is to ask Hughes if using third-party DNS is possible with their service. If the answer is positive, ask how. (You may have to configure DNS on individual computers, or on another router behind the Hughes gateway.) Then also ask if you have your own non-proxied, non-NATted, non-shared public IP. If you don't, there will be no way to keep any OpenDNS filtering settings associated with your OpenDNS Network.

Currently, OpenDNS doesn't see Hughes allowing the use of OpenDNS:
http://www.opendns.com/support/article/63

Other related forum posts:
http://forums.opendns.com/search.php?PostBackAction=Search&Keywords=Hughes&Type=Comments&btnSubmit=Search
