I have a new Netopia router and I cannot figure out how to change the DNS settings. I can access the router and see where DNS1 and DNS2 are, but I cannot find where I can edit them.

    Can anyone help?

what model Netopia router do you have?

a list of potential models is here:
    http://www.netopia.com/equipment/products/index.html

model information will help us investigate their documentation and potentially come up with an instruction page similar to the instructions we've written for other router vendors.

Netopia is now owned by Motorola. however, even though Netopia has been bought by Motorola, they most likely still run the original Netopia software.

until you can figure out how to change the information in your router, you can configure your computer locally to override the DNS servers handed out by your router. that information is available at:

I have Netopia model 3347. It is the standard residential router given out by BellSouth. I can connect to the router control center at the IP 192.168.1.254.

    Thank you for your help.

instructions for changing your DNS server for that model (3347) can be found at:

    http://www.netopia.com/support/hardware/technotes/CIR_012.html

other technical information for your device can be found at:

@jimonge: try the instructions in that first URL i post. do you have a different model? try them anyways. if you have a different model, let us know which one and i'll try and dig up documentation. if this information isn't already in the knowledge base, i'll get it added.

I have a Netopia 2210-02 from AT&T (Yahoo!). I've looked for instructions on how to change the DNS settings, but it seems that AT&T changed the firmware and it no longer acts as it does when it comes from Motorola. Motorola does not have firmware downloads in order to revert it back either...at least none that I could find. If any of you clever users have found a work around, I'm all eyes.

If you really cannot change the settings due to firmware alterations, the only solution if you want control over the router is to change routers.

Even if your provider refuses to support bridging, you can just plop another router in front of that one and use it as the control point.

I have a Netopia 3347 from Qwest and could not change the DNS through the Qwest branded setup either. But I did find a way to do so via telnet through the command line interface.

Luckily I found an admin manual on the Qwest support site that has all of the CLI commands, (http://www.qwest.com/internethelp/modems/motorola-3347/pdf/QwestAdminHandbkV774.pdf). Unless you have Qwest, you can disregard the other chapters and go to chapter 5 which talks about using the CLI, ("set dns primary-address" and "set dns secondary-address" on page 208 in particular). I'm sure Motorola has a similar command reference if you search their site for it.

With this I was able to change the DNS address to OpenDNS's addresses. Remember to reboot your router after saving the change for it to take affect.

I looked at the Motorola specs for the 2210 and it also says it supports CLI(telnet) for device management. I don't know if the commands are the same as the 3347 but you can most likely type "help" once you telnet in and see a list of available commands.
