I am using opendns/linux firefox or konqueror and recently I cannot reach www.google.com. If I enter a search query in the firefox search box I bet the following:
window.google={kEI:"p_MgSOOPKZqYoQSflbm2CQ",kEXPI:"17259,17735,18156,18168",kHL:"en"}; window.rwt=function(b,d,e,g,h,f,i){var a=encodeURIComponent||escape,c=b.href.split("#");b.href="/url?sa=t"+(d?"&oi="+a(d):"")+(e?"&cad="+a(e):"")+"&ct="+a(g)+"&cd="+a(h)+"&url="+a(c[0]).replace(/\+/g,"%2B")+"&ei=p_MgSOOPKZqYoQSflbm2CQ"+(f?"&usg="+f:"")+i+(c[1]?"#"+c[1]:"");b.onmousedown="";return true}; window.gbar={};(function(){var c=window.gbar,e,g,h;c.qs=function(a){var d=window.encodeURIComponent&&(document.forms[0].q||"").value;if(d)a.href=a.href.replace(/([?&])q=[^&]*|$/,function(f,b){return(b||"&")+"q="+encodeURIComponent(d)})};function l(a,d,f){a.display=h?"none":"block";a.left=d+"px";a.top=f+"px"}c.tg=function(a){var d=0,f=0,b,m=0,n,j=window.navExtra,k,i=document;g=g||i.getElementById("gbar").getElementsByTagName("span");(a||window.event).cancelBubble=!m;if(!e){e=i.createElement(Array.every||window.createPopup?"iframe":"DIV");e.frameBorder="0";e.scrolling="no";e.src="#";g[7].parentNode.appendChild(e).id="gbi";if(j&&g[7])

We are having the same issue with workstations at several of our locations that use openDNS....been going on for the last couple hours. -
Same problem.

Same problem here. If I revert to my provider's DNS, everything works fine.

I can't reach google either. If I ssh into another machine that doesn't use opendns, I can ping google just fine. When I ping from my local machine (using opendns) here's what happens:
$ ping www.google.com
PING www.google.com (208.67.217.231) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from google.navigation.opendns.com (208.67.217.231): icmp_seq=1 ttl=56 time=30.2 ms
64 bytes from google.navigation.opendns.com (208.67.217.231): icmp_seq=2 ttl=56 time=29.7 ms
64 bytes from google.navigation.opendns.com (208.67.217.231): icmp_seq=3 ttl=56 time=29.8 ms
This is definitely an opendns issue. And it makes me grouchy. -

+1 on this issue. All Google domains work except the main google.com. Gmail, Google Reader, Google Calendar all work fine. But main search doesn't. -
For those who are having a problem, I suggest opening a support ticket by using Contact in the Support area at bottom of this page. Good luck.

Same problem as JSMA...

I had the same problem in Konqueror, Firefox and even Lynx.
What is google.navigation.opendns.com and why does pinging www.google.com result in pings being sent there?
This discussion raises some interesting questions:
http://forums.opendns.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=226&page=2
As a temporary workaround I've stuck
64.233.167.99 www.google.com www.google.co.uk
...into my hosts file.
But I'd still like to know what the purpose of google.navigation.opendns.com is? -
I am using Kubuntu and also can't reach google.com with Firefox or Konqueror. But it works fine on my Windows XP box. Both are using the router's DNS which is set to opendns settings.
-
@Silverblade:
I disabled shortcuts because of your post. I can now access everything (accept Reader through a bookmark, but the link works)
Thanks! -
same here. using ubuntu with firefox. however i can't reach from my virtual windows xp box with ie either. images.google.com or gmail is accessible but www.google.com isn't accessible.

FWIW I'm on Kubuntu and I have another PC which runs Windows. Worked fine on Windows, but not on Kubuntu. -
I am also experiencing this problem, Ubuntu 8.04 with Firefox.
Thanks! -
img0.gmodules.com also has this problem.

img0.gmodules.com is also resolving to google.navigation.opendns.com (208.69.34.231), it seems. -
from our end this problem appears to have started yesterday (around 24 hours ago). we found we had to constantly refresh google after performing searches. today, of course, it's significantly worse with pages only partially coming up when using opendns to resolve google.com and the related country specific versions.

Yep OpenDNS is pointing to their own server google.navigation.opendns.com. and not to google:
on-authoritative answer:
www.google.com canonical name = google.navigation.opendns.com.
Name: google.navigation.opendns.com
Address: 208.67.219.230
Name: google.navigation.opendns.com

Also have this problem - Don't think OS/Browser matters, but Ubuntu 8.04 and FF3b5.
Apparently, Google and Dell were (are?) redirecting Dell users to a custom search page that was plastered with ads and such. Since it isn't entirely user friendly to have to scroll down just for those users to view search results, OpenDNS redirects all users to a OpenDNS proxy of Google (from what I understand) so that Dell users don't have to view all the ads. However, from what it appears, Apache on that redirection server has failed, and all of us are sitting here without our Google.

Having to enter Google's IP address to search isn't exactly fun, especially when I've got a search box in Firefox, only it doesn't work =/ -

Problem also experienced here. I have opened a support ticket. I'm on Linux / Opensuse 10.3, Firefox. -
I get regular google.com here.
nslookup www.google.com shows:
DNS server: resolver1.opendns.com 208.67.222.222
Answer addresses: Normal google addresses, such as 74.125.19.99
I don't see anything related to google.navigation.opendns.com -

Hey OpenDNS until you figure out why google.navigation.opendns.com is being blocked why don't you just point us to a REAL google IP! -
I am having this problem also. I first started seeing problems with this last night, and it seems to have gotten worse today.
-
wow, I didn't realize how much I relied on google until I can't access it anymore. I'm out of commission.
-
Same problem here, but it can be fixed:
Dashboard > SETTINGS (tab) > Network Shourtcuts (left side)
- Uncheck "Enable OpenDNS proxy"
----------------------------------------
For Ubuntu (Linux),
- Open up a console
- $ sudo /etc/init.d/network restart
It should now work.
----------------------------------------
For Windows,
I think you might just need to "repair" the network, otherwise, type the following at the command prompt:
C:\>ipconfig /flushdnsThankful People: jerome1232 -
I'm having the same issue. www.google.com points to google.navigation.opendns.com (208.69.32.231 and 208.69.32.230). However, google (without the www) correctly points to google.com (64.233.167.99, 72.14.207.99, 64.233.187.99)
In the meantime, I just added a manual entry in my hosts file for www.google.com -
@mahuyar: the only problem with this solution is that it disables the blocking of adult content. i don't want my users to start surfing porn again :-)
-
I am also having this issue. I can't do anything with www.google.com. It is resolving to some opendns.com addresses instead:
Name: google.navigation.opendns.com
Address: 208.67.217.231
Name: google.navigation.opendns.com
Address: 208.67.217.230
I've tried refreshing the OpenDNS cache to no avail. If I use the IP addresses the CacheCheck provides - http://64.233.169.103/ for example - Google loads normally.
HELP! :). -
@davidu: any chance of a status update on this? it's the middle of the business day here in australia, and I need to know whether I should be implementing a workaround for the time being. cheers.

The post earlier by mahuyar worked for me, yay google is back other than by ip :) just be sure to clear all of your cache's after you change it. (I had to do a 10 sec powercycle on my router and clear my browsers cache) -
AdministratorMicroboss --- We're having a lot of trouble seeing what's wrong. None of our monitoring is tripping, and none of our logs show errors. Can you give me an idea of what errors you are seeing? And if someone is running a unix platform and wants to send me the output of "tcpdump -n -vv -s 4092 -X port 80"
Please don't post it here, but email it directly to david+traceroutes at opendns.com -
@davidu: tcpdump sent!
-
Administratoraligas -- thanks! checking now.
-
Im sending you the info =)
... late =P -
Here's what I get with a DNS lookup of google in Australia or UK?
nslookup www.google.au
nslookup google.uk
I get an IP of 208.67.219.132
tracert 208.67.219.132
leads to hit-nxdomain.opendns.com
Didn't see anything with google.navigation.opendns.com in it. Sorry.
nslookup google.com returns various, correct google IP's for me.
tracert google.com leads to jc-in-f99-google.com
Maybe this will help. -

@davidu: I agree with brijam. Whatever you folks did (or are doing) is working. I can now reach www.google.com without issue.

resolved here in australia also. thanks.
@mamazitta: you are referring to google by invalid domains which opendns resolves back to one of their own servers. it should be www.google.com.au and www.google.co.uk.Thankful People: mamazitta -
