DNS-O-Matic / dynamic IPs: setting up router to update dynamic ip

    Hi

    I have set up the service and am using the updater client software to notify opendns when my dynamic ip changes.
    However this requires me to leave the computer on 24hrs a day to protect the network.
    My Huawei HG532 router has a tab marked DDNS wihich I assume is to set up the router to send the ip updates itself. I cannot figure out how to fill in the fields and would appreciate your help.

    Drop down boxes

    Service Provider:Options are TZO/DynDNS.org/Others
    WAN connection : Options are nas_0_38/ttyUSBO
    Protocol: Only option is GNUDip.http

    The I need to fill in the following boxes
    Domain:
    Host:
    User Name:
    Password:
    Server address:
    Server Port:

    Any help on the correct settings and/or whether this router will do the job would be great.

    Unfortunately, that is not what the dynamic DNS setup is for.

    Dynamic DNS allows you to run a website address such as mypersonalhouse.net without buying/having a fixed IP address; you could run a website from inside your house this way. And the dynamic DNS setup allows for the world's DNS servers to know your home's IP address to find the website even when it changes.

    Haven't done this with a Huawei but it should work, this is how I got a thomson router to update opendns via DDNS.
    http://npr.me.uk/webfilter.html
    Ignore the telnet stuff, that doesn't apply to your router.

    "The I need to fill in the following boxes"
    Try:

    Service Provider: Others
    WAN connection : This will be the interface name / type of your internet connection.

    Domain: (leave empty)
    Host: enter your opendns network label or enter the catch all -- all.dnsomatic.com
    User Name: Opendns username
    Password: Opendns password
    Server address: updates.dnsomatic.com
    Server Port:

    You will need to log in to dns-o-matic and add the opendns service as described in the above link.

    Thanks for the info. However my router will not accept having the Domain or Port fields left empty. Any suggestions please

    Domain: Try anything, e.g. dnsomatic.com
    Port: Try 80

    tried as suggested. no luck. I am wondering if the router is even attampting to send anything.

    Well, you'll have to refer to the support facilities for your router. Don't expect that somebody knows this here.
    Bad enough if this isn't explained sufficiently in the manual already.

    You could snag a NSLU2 and a cheap USB drive and throw a copy of Debian Slug on it, and run ddclient (like I do).
