I would like to delete my account. You see, I received an email from OpenDNS and prefer not too. The email says I can "Opt-out" by changing the settings on my accounts page. Unfortunately the page demands information I do not want to give, and refuses to update my preferences until I fill in the page. This means there REALLY IS NO OPT-OUT! At this point, this site looks like a spam machine and I just want to delete my account. How to? -

I also received that email and went to Opt-out and succeeded. There is a minimum info that the page needs and then it is satisfied, but the fields are not marked which ones are necessary. Name and postal code seems to be the ones. OpenDNS is not as bad as you might think, it just seems like it at first.
And I don't know how to delete an account. It should be easier to opt-out, but OpenDNS is not perfect. -
I never got any "spam" from OpenDNS. What did you receive as "spam"?
You can uncheck the boxes in your Account Info if you prefer:

I received a spam from Allison Rhode, which is a typical spammer's name. At the end of the email it says:
* UNSUBSCRIBE: If you wish to no longer receive e-mails from OpenDNS, you may opt-out by unchecking the box in your account settings.
However the page refuses to recognize my information. This is a typical strategy used by spammers. As a result, I am unable to opt-out and want to delete my account. -

I think everyone is hungry now, lol :-)
Btw.. what everyone is referring to is the OpenDNS Summer Newsletter who opted in of receiving OpenDNS updates, sent by Allison Rhodes. -

OK, I was able to "opt-out". It seems like my browser's cookie was filling the email field with an incomplete email and that was causing the problem. For us dummies, the page should mark which field is failing.
And yes, we make the finest falafel this side of Haifa. Fryer oil is replaced daily and the used oil sent off to fill someone's tank. Imagine driving down the road your exhaust smelling like falafel ;=) -

The only way to stop the rising cost of fuel.. use Falafel's fryer oil.. lol ;-) -

I just received a similar message from OpenDNS. All the information entered into the "My Info" page is correct, and both email boxes are unchecked and have been since the day I created my account. Yet I am still receiving the newsletter emails. I don't want to be mean and reject your friendly newsletters, but I just know I won't have time to read them. So, is there any way to actually opt-out? Thanks.
By the way, if it helps anyone, here's the header on the email I received:

I haven't got anything like you guys are talking about. You must of done something to allow it to happen.
Note:Opendns says that they won't spam you. So I don't think you guys are getting spam. -
I never got anything from OpenDNS via e-mail, except responses on tickets or "private" messages, although I have checked "Get service updates from OpenDNS via email". I had not checked "Let me know about beta features". I have checked this now as well to see if this changes anything.

I got a Fall 2008 newsletter spam message today from Allison Rhodes and neither the "Let me know about beta features" nor "Get service updates from OpenDNS via email" checkboxes on my account page are checked.
So they sent me the message despite me telling them not to. It might say "no we won't spam you", but apparently they will. Yahoo did correctly identify it as spam. -

Excuse me? How can you call one informative email "spam". You are either extremely dumb or just a pathetic hater of an organization that is trying to help people. -

As I said: "I don't want to be mean and reject your friendly newsletters, but I just know I won't have time to read them." I love OpenDNS and if receiving your newsletters is how you want me to show my support, then by all means keep sending them. I brought up the issue simply because I thought it was a computer bug or an error on my part. In ether case, I thought sharing my experience could help the community, because it seems that others are experiencing similar occurrences. :) -
AdministratorElectroworks -- We're double-checking to make sure we didn't accidentally send it to users who asked not to receive it. I'm pretty sure we checked carefully though...Thankful People: electroworks

AdministratorHey Everyone.
This was indeed a bug in our system. The newsletter was sent to some accounts who opted not to receive it. We sincerely apologize for this and have taken measures to prevent this from happening with future mailings. -

I am glad they fixed the BUG, I did OPT in for it and will read them when they come. If you people do not realize they are the main engine of your internet, so it might be helpful to read what is going on with you engine.
Also, keep this in mind. This is a free service and anything they can give or do for you is and should be appreciated. This is a GREAT service. Thanks! -
Everyone should also understand that you agreed to receive these emails when you agreed to the privacy policy upon creation of your OpenDNS account. Spam is defined as unsolicited bulk (or commercial) email. By agreeing to receive these emails (via the privacy policy) they are not considered unsolicited hence they cannot be called spam. However, if they were sent to you after you requested they not be sent (via your account settings) then they could be considered spam. The bug in the system was unfortunate and could also then allow one to classify those messages sent erroneously as spam.
