I have configured my Linksys router for open DNS.
My question is - do I have also to configure my laptop (XP Home, SP3)or can I leave the connection properties as "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically"?
Thanks. -
Router configuration only is fine.
If you configured your computers individually, their settings would take precedence over your router settings. So normally you should leave "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".Thankful People: Nat -
You must leave "obtain IP automatically" as this gets your IP number from your Internet provider, provided you have a dynamic address. Most home users have dynamic and business users have static IP addresses.
If you have OPenDNS addresses in your router, then you do not need to put them in your laptop. Set laptop to "obtain DNS automatically". This will make your laptop look down-the-road to your router for a DNS.
Note: Any addresses you put in your laptop will override the router. If you have same addresses in both router and laptop it will cause no harm. Just remember that your laptop address settings will always override the router.
Hope this helps.
edit: oops. I see rotblitz replied while I was typing this. :) -
Thanks for that

Sorry, I would like to disagree, as this option only obtains an internal IP address from the router, so is far not related to the public IP address from the ISP. -
@rotblitz
You caught me again! :)
Forgot about the router. But if you don't have a router my statement is true.

@mamazitta
Yes, this is right: with a dial-up or PPPoE connection this option would pick the ISP's as public IP address directly.

If you take your laptop to other places and use other networks I would assign the DNS server addresses. I think the only downside is that your blocked categories and whitelist will not follow unless it is the only computer on your home network and you have the OpenDNS IP Updater running. -
1. My "Obtain DNS server address automatically" checkbox is greyed out. Because it have dependencies on "Obtain an IP address automatically".
2. I must disable DHCP in my router (some security reasons) so i must manually entering an IP address.
3. If "Use the following IP address" is checked, "Obtain DNS server address automatically" is greyed out.
Anybody have best solutions? -
If you are using XP, there are only 2 address setting types: IP and DNS --- and these are two completely different things.
If you set "obtain IP address automatically" then none of your DNS settings are greyed out. Put OpenDNS server addresses in the DNS area if you have just one computer and no router. If you have a router and want every PC to use OpenDNS then set PC's to "obtain DNS automatically" so they will look down-the-line to the router for a DNS address.
Hope this helps.Thankful People: 023200xx -
Actually mamazitta, if you are using a static IP you cannont obtain your DNS automatically.
Best solution:
If your router is separate from your modem:
Set your WAN (Internet Connection Port) on your router to a Static IP. Usually the modem had DHCP and passes an IP onto the router. Pick one outside of the DHCP range, but in the same subnet.
Now your router should let you define DNS servers for the WAN connection. Set the DNS server IP's to OpenDNS.
When you setup static IP addresses for each computer, point their DNS IP's to the router's internal network IP address. It will forward DNS to OpenDNS for you.
If your router and modem are the same device:
Usually a router/modem combo will not let you assign DNS to the WAN/Internet Connection Port because you have a dynamic IP address. Static IP's will allow you to configure that, but dynamic *usually* does not.
Your option here is to configure each workstation with OpenDNS IP's in the DNS section.Thankful People: 023200xx -
I allready had configure my xdsl modem with opendns. All my computers in the lan (3 laptops and 2 pc) are dhcp enable. All of them take as dns the opendns server. But, all the website that are suppost to be blocked are open. My configuration is in low level. Can someone help me with this issue?
Regards,
Cesar Garnier
NOTE: I RESOLVE THE ISSUE. I RESTART EVERYTHING AND OPENDNS START WORKING -
HI..IF I`AM CONECCTED THROUGHT A ROUTER..DO I HAVE TO CONFIGURE MY ROUTER OR JUST MY PC..BECAUSE I CAN`T CONFIGURE MY OPENDNS ACCOUNT..??
-
You can do it on both, computer and router, but one alone is enough. Computer setting will usually override router setting. However router setting is the preferred method, as then the settings work with all computers and devices in your network, in case you have more than just one.
