I have a Linksys WRT54GC, and discovered to my dismay that apparently you can specify a DNS server for the Static IP mode only . This is a bit of a problem, since Cox (my ISP) uses DHCP. Comments, ideas, etc would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    LJ

The easiest answer is to change DNS on your computer instead. http://www.opendns.com/start/

Yes, if you have multiple computers, you will have to change each one -- but only that once!

Thanks, that worked. Did it for both my Windows XP Pro SP2 and Xubuntu 6.10 machines.

The speed difference between OpenDNS and Cox is like night and day. Keep up the good work, this is amazing :)

I have dsl connection at home and dynamic internet ip address. I've setup my router to useee opendns dns servers. Can we have opendns automatically adjust? is there a software we can install. Opendns is a great service for home and small offices. Thanks a lot. More power to opendns.com.

Are there any other solutions to this problem? I'd like to block anyone who uses my network and I can't control their computers.

Can't you just set the DNS on you router's DHCP scope? If your computers are getting DHCP assignment from the router's DHCP, that should solve it without static assignments.

I'm not sure what you mean by "set the DNS on your router's DHCP scope" since we've already said that the Linksys firmware for the router only allows you to set the DNS if you select a static IP.

Hi, i'm not very familiar with setting up my internet connections but i try to learn. i use a Linksys WRT54GC at home. i was given my DHCP settings by my ISP. as i've read above, it seems i cannot change the DHCP settings on my router and instead will have to change it on every computer on my network?
i'd like to control my network through my router because visiting friends often use the internet with their laptops and do i have to change their settings as well? do i have other options?
    thanks in advance

You can set the WRT54GC to use Opendns however it will not do so under automatic dhcp. You have to assign your router manually, via Static settings. This can be a problem if your isp, assigns you a different ip later on. In which you may loose internet then thus go back to auto DHCP. And then back to Static.

Strangely, when I set the DNS on my router, the Cisco VPN wouldn't connect properly. It's OK if I set Opendns on the hosts, but if the router is using it, no VPN.

@girarde: In the dashboard under advanced settings you'll see the heading "Exceptions for VPN users", there you can add your local domains. More information can be found here: http://opendns.com/support/article/164
