I have no idea what's going on or what to do. This morning the auto updater icon inthe system tray was blinking from orange to red. I clicked on update and it just sat there. Nothing happened and I could not exit it. I tried going to the updater homepage and it would not load.

    Any ideas?

As far as I have seen myself, OpenDNS do some maintenance work these days and take down the one or other server for minutes. (DNS itself not affected.) This may be a situation, which the Updater program cannot handle.
Please come back if you see more such occurences.

    Hi Everyone,

You can ignore the error message. We are currently working on the server that receives the updates and should have it back up in the next few hours. We apologize for any confusion due to the language of that message.

Many thanks for clearing that up.

You can go to https://www.opendns.com/dashboard/networks/ to update your IP address manually, if it's no longer in sync.
If it is in sync, you will see "(your current IP)" beside your IP address. If it's not, there will be green arrows between the older and the current IP address. Just click this arrow pair, and you're done, i.e. all your features and settings are back.

Thanks for this, I only found the post after Googling for the it! Is there any reason why this kind of information can't be updated onto the System Status page - this is the first place I looked as it is part of the system.

I never setup a network from the dashboard - I have the servers entered just on my PC. And I am STILL getting intermittent flashing icons.

I'm not users any of the extra features of Open DNS other than the DNS vulnerability issue. I have yet to find a basic info file explaining exactly what each of these features is for or how to set them up -assuming I was interested in blocking sites and such ... which I'm not.

So, why do you use the OpenDNS Updater program at all? In your case it is totally useless, especially as you did not set up a network. So, what should the Updater update then? There is nothing to update!

@saurus - If you are not using OpenDNS for account-based services, such as filtering, shortcuts, etc., you do not need to use the update client. The update client is so that people who use those account-based services can keep their IP address updated in their account and continue to have preferences mapped to their account when it changes.

Also, the page at http://www.opendns.com/features/overview/ will explain our account-based services and there is also helpful information in our KB at http://www.opendns.com/support/kb/

If you have further questions please open a support ticket at http://www.opendns.com/support/contact/

I'm getting it as well. I disabled "ballon" messages and now I don't see them. I'm sorry for being a grammar phreak, but somebody please correct the grammar in the error message and the misspelling of *balloon*.

Ah, I see it is under review.

    From the System Status page;

    Issues with dynamic update client

We’re aware that some of the dynamic update clients are currently having trouble… updating. This only affects clients using updates.opendns.com with SSL. We’re working on having the issue resolved as soon as possible.

Well, that's a very good question, and I'd like to be able to answer it. Unfortunately, of the 2 support tickets I've sent regarding exactly what the different options Open DNS would do for me - other than the DNS vulnerability issue - neither has resulted in an answer to read the FAQ, which doesn't answer those questions at all. So judging from your question, I guess I might as well delete the damned thing, because after nearly 9 hours, I am still getting update errors.

I also experienced some issues this afternoon (about 1:30pm eastern). I reset my router ( Apple Airport Express ) and my internet connection was live again, but was not filtered. I checked my router settings and that it was pushing the correct DNS servers to my computers. Everything in the system was set correctly, but my filter was not working still. I checked the dashboard to make sure my IP was correct and it was. The filter was still down on my end at 5:15pm eastern. I returned home at 8:30pm eastern and the filter is working correctly again. Not sure what happened. My updater is still down.

    flashdudette,

If your stats also stopped, its possible your machine is no longer configured to point to OpenDNS. Check http://welcome.opendns.com/ and see what it says.
  9.  permalink
it says I am using it - I also check my router settings and it is still good. So I am not sure what is happening. I still get this "empty message error". I checked at ShieldsUp from grc and the ip address I entered manually is the same. Any idea or what my problem could be?

I used another updater and site started to be blocked again. However I still do not have any stats which is strange. Something is wrong but I am not sure what it is.

Well, I had to revert to my ISP's DNS servers just to reach ANY pages at www.opendns.com.

Everything else seemed to be working fine except the Updater which continually told me I had no internet connection. It's been this way since yesterday afternoon (US-Central).

Now I've got a new IP address, and when I switch back to opendns servers I won't be able to access the dashboard to manually update my IP address (which will change yet again once I switch back).

Geeze, I just started using opendns yesterday and now this!

Opendns is really MUCH faster than my default servers. Hope this gets straightened out really soon!

Well, same as with flashdudette, there are no stats for me since days. But everything is perfect: the welcome page confirms I'm using OpenDNS, and my IP address on the dashboard is in sync with my real public IP address, and all intended features work, as far as I am able to verify this.
There was a yellow comment similar to that not all stats may be available for a few users, so I seem to be one of those?

    @saurus
Unlike many other people you seem to have difficulties in understanding the features of OpenDNS. I think they are pretty well described and explained on their pages. Whatever, if you didn't get feed-back on your tickets from these apparently very busy people, just ask your questions here in the forum. Here are many expert users, who may be able to answer them.

Edit: Just to stay on-topic with this thread, I ran the Updater test-wise to see if I also face problems, and yes, there seem to be issues: I see many update attempts within short time intervals, and about 90% of them state that the site is not available, the remainder update attempts are reported to be with success.

I normally run my updates by other means (router, DNS Allocator, DNS-o-Matic), but this didn't work as well today. I had to update my IP address manually in the dashboard.

My updater is still not working properly. I get the success message but also the service not available on and off. Still no stats. This is pretty frustrating.
  14.  permalink
Found the solution for the stats. I deleted my network and recreated it. Now I get the stats. However I have to redo all the blocked and never block domains and this is a pain.

It was probably not necessary to delete your network. It would have been better to create a second one, then applying your settings "for all networks", and then delete the old one.
This would have saved you the annoying job entering everything from anew...

Is there a timeframe for when this should be expected to be fixed? The updater reports success in the update log however it is still not updating the IP info as none of the filters work. Whenever I go to the network page I have the old IP and the new one with the green arrows and have to manually update. Also are there any routers on the market for home users that has this update capability built in that works with OpenDNS so that software on the PC is not needed?

Never mind. I think I figured it out. I changed the DNS addresses in my router, but my PC was still using the old DNS. When I change that, the updater stopped giving me the message.
