Has anyone been able to successfully setup OpenDNS on a Blackjack? We have lots of people request instructions, but since none of us have a Blackjack, we haven't been able to write them.

Hi! I've figured out how to use your own DNS entires instead of the DHCP assigned ones from Cingular:

I haven't done any tests to see if there was an actual difference, but hopefully someone can perform tests now!

(If you're not familiar with editing the registry, then hopefully you won't know where to find software to make these changes for your Windows Mobile Smarphone.)

    -----------------------------------------
To add the DNS Servers for OpenDNS go to:

    HKLM\ComWWAN1-wap.cingular-1\Parms\TCPIP

Create a new MultiLine String Value called "DNS" and add the two servers as its Values:

    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220

    ------------------------------------------

That worked like a charm! There is a huge difference on my t-mobile dash. I had to change the one with the t-mobile apn in it instead.
    Thanks for posting this!

I have tried this and it will still bring you to the oPPs welcome screen. We still need to find a way for opendns to work with a Blackjack!

OK, I have the fix for the Blackjack. Goto start/settings/connections/gprs/gprs and hit the right soft key (menu). You will want to add a new connection (Add Gprs) I called mine "OpenDNS" without the qoutes. For cingular add these settings:

    Connects to: The Internet
    Access point: wap.cingular
    User Name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
    Password: CINGULAR1
    Primary DNS: 208.67.222.222
    Secondary DNS: 208.67.220.220
    IP address: nothing

Now go back to the connections screen (the wireless manager will be highlighted) goto the advance menu by hitting the softkey menu. Just change the Internet connection: to OpenDNS and reset. Make sure you have cleared your memory cache!

Nick, sounds good. I hope some others can weigh in with confirmation. If we have screenshots, that would be even better!

Update: I did delete the DNS in the registry and found that it will not use the DNS servers without it so you have to add this as "peephole" suggested.

To add the DNS Servers for OpenDNS go to:

    HKLM\ComWWAN1-wap.cingular-1\Parms\TCPIP

Create a new MultiLine String Value called "DNS" and add the two servers as its Values:

    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
Do all of the above and the Opendns will work. Maybe some one will make a cab for this.

will the instructions that nickbarb included above in the simple go to connections work? or do you have to edit the registry?

I followed the instructions provided by nickbarb up above, and it works just fine. The jury is still out on it being faster or not...

I did the first set of instructions by nickbarb. I am not in a 3G area and I noticed a substantial gain (about 5 times faster) in the performance of GoogleMaps, which I use daily. However, the welcome page at opendns indicates "oops" still.

I was unable to edit the registry as I received " Access is denied." when attempting to add that key. I would not even edit the existing DhcpDNS Key. Guess I'll need to search more to see how to open it as r/w.
