Domain Name System (DNS) troubles: why does opendns return its own ip address for an internal site.

this is an nslookup result from my isp dns.... (and is correct)
nslookup qbex01.ad.qbranch.se 213.80.98.2
Server: 213.80.98.2
Address: 213.80.98.2#53
** server can't find qbex01.ad.qbranch.se: NXDOMAIN
This is an nslookup against the opendns dns server and it returns a bogus address which belongs to opendns. This is not what i would expect.
root@pcmarpxy : /etc: 04:06 PM:
nslookup qbex01.ad.qbranch.se 208.67.222.222
Server: 208.67.222.222
Address: 208.67.222.222#53
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: qbex01.ad.qbranch.se
Address: 208.69.34.132 -
When you try issue an HTTP request to a bogus domain, opendns will display its opendns guide portal page. In order to do that, you have to actually get an HTTP reply from opendns, which means that your bogus name has to resolve to an opendns http server. I suspect they do this to fund the business with the ads from the page, since the service is free.
The one thing I'd like to know is how to turn this off, so that the domain does not resolve. I've noticed that my ISP does the same thing now too, and I expect this to be the new trend unfortunately. -
You are right, DNS queries, which normally result in NXDOMAIN, are redirected to nx-domain.opendns.com and from there to guide.opendns.com.
And yes, there are ways to change this (locally), but I cannot describe it here, because OpenDNS staff tend to remove such hints with the argument "Using ... can cause unpredictable results and is not recommended"...
Edit: Oh, bhu73, you want to get rid of this for internal sites only?
Well, this is a problem of DNS taking priority over NetBIOS.
