DNS-O-Matic / dynamic IPs: IP theft triggered by setting OpenDNS in my router

I have noticed that setting OpenDNS servers in my router triggers an IP theft as soon as my cable modem reboots/it is powered on (e.g. after power failure).
I have solved such problem by using standard (automatic) DNS servers in my router, and putting OpenDNS servers in my Windows/Linux network settings.
I have a Ziggo internet connection (fomerly Essent Kabelcom aka @Home). My dynamic IP changes about twice in three years. So, changing the IP three times in less than 24 hours it is highly suspicious behavior on Ziggo network. This is how I found about IP theft being triggered. The reverse DNS search done by GRC Shields Up showed that my computer name was wrongly reported after the cable modem rebooted with OpenDNS servers set in my router.
The General Conditions of @Home (now Ziggo) defined IP theft as a form of serious abuse. -
"IP theft
(eye-PEE theft) v. To take copyrighted material without permission, infringe a trademark, violate a patent, or otherwise steal the intellectual property of a person or company. Also: intellectual property theft.
—IP thief n."

So now what? What is DNS in general or OpenDNS to do with IP theft, even if you think about "IP address" instead of "Intellectual Property"? How could or should this technically work with DNS? -
Your kidding me, rotblitz. Ofcourse he means IP address.

Sounds like you need to talk with an L2 at Ziggo. Send the them about links for OpenDNS, also. Do Ziggo's TOS require you to use their DN servers? You might read the fine print just to make sure.

Aren't IP addresses always reallocated when power is cycled on a router? -
AdministratorCan you give us a better idea of what you mean by IP theft? Are you saying your IP address is changing, or more than one computer is getting assigned the same IP by your router?
-
It sounds like you're trying to set up OpenDNS on your router, but Ziggo is sending you a new public IP address via DHCP when you change the router's DNS settings.
The "IP theft" is probably a conflict between your old IP address and whomever received the numeric address when Ziggo reallocated the address.
You should have your router set up for DHCP if that's what Ziggo uses. If you've set your router to expect a static public IP, then you need to change that setting to DHCP.
If you need a static IP address from Ziggo, they will probably sell you one for an extra fee per month.
You can always use DynDNS.org or another service to map your public IP address to a domain name, too.
