    I have been working on getting my website server up for a while. I am now trying out OpenDNS. The problem is, I set it up the way it said in the help page. I have a 2wire home portal and my server pc has DMZplus Enabled. Now I can see my web server on the server pc, but i can't see it on my laptop that is on the network. My friend can't even view it. it would say "Server Timed Out". here is my ipconfig. see if you can help me out. now my public ip is pointing to my server pc, and I have setup my domain name pointing to * 208.67.222.222
    * 208.67.220.220

    Um, what?

    "I have setup my domain name pointing to * 208.67.222.222 * 208.67.220.220"

    This will do absolutely nothing. You need to find a domain name hosting service.

    Do the ipconfig /all on the laptop as well.

    Remove these entries.
    DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : gateway.2wire.net
    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : gateway.2wire.net

    I would also think that the default gateway should be 192.168.1.254, and that IPv4 Address: 68.88.254.69 should be in 192.168.1. block, going by the 2Wire default config. You may wish to wait for a response from someone rather more expert with networks, though.

    So you have set the OpenDNS addresses in your router under Broadband Link > Advanced Settings? You may need to invoke other settings here to allow incoming connection attempts, in the router and server.

    Don't do this. It has no effect. OpenDNS does not host DNS entries!
    @maintenance already mentioned it.

    "Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 67.66.62.14" - or 68.88.254.69
    Why is this a public dynamic IP address of swbell.net? I would have expected this to be 192.168.1.254, i.e. your router's address, unless your server also works as a router...

    I can't really tell you. I don't know but i use 67.66.62.13 to view my site. and sometimes i use 192.168.1.254 to edit my router.

    192.168.1.254 is your routers LAN IP. This should be the default gateway.

    67.66.62.13 This is (or was) your public IP address. They are dynamic, that is, they change after some amount of time. You will need to ensure that you know your current IP address to use it to get in to your LAN from the internets.

    http://www.robtex.com/dns/jesseleefanclub.mobi.html#whois

    You can't use OpenDNS nameservers as the authoritative nameservers for your domain. You need to engage a service for this. Also, when hosting a domain on a dynamic IP, you need a service to keep your domain pointing at your IP.

    Sometimes if you are on the same network as the server, you can't use the external IP address to access the server. You have to use the internal address. I say sometimes, but in my personal experiences, I always have to use the internal IP address.

    "192.168.1.254 is your routers LAN IP. This should be the default gateway"
    This is what I first thought as well. But may I direct your attention to this ipconfig part from his server PC:

    DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
    Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
    IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 67.66.62.13(Preferred)
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.252
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 67.66.62.14

    I.e. this is what he gets from his router/modem, as DHCP and autoconfig are enabled! And look at the subnet mask: room for four IP addresses, one is used for the local IP address an one as gateway address.
    I did not have to deal with such a configuration by now, so I cannot really comment on it or recommend to disable DHCP to assign static internal IP addresses to point everything to the router.
    Let's see if anybody else knows more about this.

    Also, what makes me horrified is that there could be a big security risk:
    NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled
    Does this mean that all these dangerous Windows ports can be reached from the public internet? :shocked:
    Hopefully there is a NAT (apparently not!) or other firewall in the router, or that he runs a good SW firewall on the server...

    "You need to engage a service for this."
    http://everydns.net/ would be such a service.

    "you need a service to keep your domain pointing at your IP."
    Like DynDNS.org and so many others, but EveryDNS.net does as well.

    @diacon
    "if you are on the same network as the server, you can't use the external IP address to access the server."
    I can always use both, the internal or the external IP address or domain name to reach an internal server in my home network from within it. I have, of course, to open the related ports for inbound traffic on the router's NAT firewall.

    netopia routers in particular wont let you use the public ip from inside the network even if the ports are forwarded. but ive never had that problem with any other type of router.
