Thank you. -

"AT&T Starbucks" What exactly does this mean?
"I have tried to change the settings" Which settings are you attempting to change?
If you are a customer using WiFi at a coffee shop, don't try to make it your network, as you do not own the public IP address of the Starbucks WiFi. -
I did follow the tutorial.
"AT&T Starbucks" means that I am sitting at a Starbucks using AT&T wifi network.
"Settings" Means I have gone through the tutorial and followed the directions and they did not work.
As far as the settings I do not have "Built In Ethernet". I have Ethernet. Here is a screen shot: http://entertainment.webshots.com/photo/2746961170101572109YISLiC
What do I need to do to make OpenDNS work at a Starbucks/AT&T wifi location? -

Echoing @maintenance....
You are not permitted (or at the very least, you ought not to be permitted) to override the settings at a WiFi cafe like Starbucks.
Think about it: You are a guest at Starbucks and you want to change their settings.
If I visited your home and asked to change your settings, would you acquiesce?Thankful People: rotblitz, Red Prince, maxh91, maintenance -
All that to tell us that at a Starbucks/AT&T Location OpenDNS does not work? Correct?
-
Please explain why OpenDNS works when I am at home or a friends house and the only change I have made is on my laptop and not on their router?

If I read your question correctly, no, you are not correct. OpenDNS *can* work at Starbucks *IF* the site administrator (i.e. Starbuck's IT person) wants to use it. YOU, a visitor, cannot impose it on their network.
The owner of the network can impose restrictions - not unlike OpenDNS' features - to prevent users from bypassing it's own security. Let's assume Starbuck's uses a competitor to OpenDNS (and if they are, it's likely a weaker product than OpenDNS)... one of the features it will impose is using their own DNS server. And why not? They own the network, they can do whatever they want.Thankful People: rotblitz -
Do you know of anyone using OpenDNS on the Starbucks/AT&T Network?
-
I am a Mac user, and an AT&T customer.
You can log in at Starbucks using your AT&T login and password if you are an existing AT&T customer.
Otherwise, you need to pick up one of Starbuck's cards and register it online BEFORE attempting to use their wifi system. Details here <http://www.starbucks.com/retail/wireless.asp>
Here are the instructions for logging on using Mac OS X
1. Select SYSTEM PREFERENCES.
2. Select NETWORK.
3. Select AIRPORT in show menu.
4. Click TCP/IP tab—make sure DHSCP is selected.
5. Click AIRPORT tab and select attwifi.
6. Click APPLY NOW.
7. Open your web browser
I recommend creating a new network location, so you can easily switch to the Starbucks Network Location as needed, on future visits.
You do not get to chose which DNS servers you use, so attempting to change your DNS server settings to OpenDNS will not work.
As maintenance said above, it is their network, so their choice of DNS settings. I assume the IT folks at Starbucks work just as hard as the rest of us, at trying to keep people from circumventing their network security and settings. -
Thank you I will give that a try and report back later.

Pay to use WiFi systems typically employ a proxy system. With this type of system your DNS settings aren't configurable. So in short, no you can't use OpenDNS at Starbucks.

"Please explain why OpenDNS works when I am at home or a friends house and the only change I have made is on my laptop and not on their router?"
I use AT&T DSL at my business and Earthlink DSL at home. Neither of the care which domain name servers I use. I assume that is true of a lot of service providers. Your ISP at home obviously does not object. And it looks like your various friend's providers don't object either.
This is rarely the case at hotspots (including Starbucks). I set up a small open wireless network for the park across the street from our house recently. Since then I have spent a lot of time reading on this forum and learning about the OpenDNS filters, port blocking, and router configurations. Without imposing some rules and filtering, one opens themselves up to being legally responsible for some jerk downloading endless amounts of copy protected works, trafficking in kiddie porn, or spamming the western hemisphere.Thankful People: maintenance, cindelicato
