At the moment OpenDNS locates your network via IP address. However, the vast majority of internet users, especially home users have a dynamic IP address. Would it be possible for OpenDNS to locate the network via Dynamic DNS. E.g. through dyndns.org -

Hmm. Not sure what you are asking for here. You can certainly keep your IP updated through dyndns. http://www.opendns.com/support/dynamic_ip_downloads/
Location in relation to nameserver locations is done by internet routing, and generally, even though you have a dynamic IP address, it belongs to a block of IPs "owned" by your ISP. -
I believe that George Robinson is talking about OpenDNS to look occasionally after e.g. a DynDNS.org domain and update the dashboard network accordingly, similar to what http://dnsalloc.appspot.com/ does today. This would be a great option!
Why?
Currently DNS-O-Matic is simply not usable, as it keeps bouncing my DynDNS.org domains due to abusive updates. Also, since a few days it doesn't support OpenDNS any longer, if the request did not come from the original IP address. Many routers do not support OpenDNS (because of the mandatory TLS/SSL) and often also not DNS-O-Matic, but almost other DDNS services. So it would be brilliant to have the proposed option, which would allow to keep the OpenDNS network in sync with no computer switched on and from the router alone.Thankful People: maintenance -

This sounds like a great idea. I know nothing about networks but have looked at some of the excellent suggestions on this forum to help me set up opendns with my home wireless network. I need to update my dynamic ip directly from my modem which doesn't not list opendns but does list dyndns.org. I have managed set up a host at dyndns.org which updates, then updates dnsalloc.appspot (all ok so far) but doesn't update dnsomatic. I just get 'error' on my dnsomatic account. When I look at the log on the left of my account it says unable to give details as my ip address at present is not the same as my opendns account! I have checked my details on dnsalloc.appspot and as far as I can tell they seem correct.
Please can you help me out I want to update from the router because when my daughter's friend comes round with her laptop I want to be sure they go through the filter.
I am a real novice at this so I apoligise in advance. -

Unfortunately there is no help regarding DNS Allocator, because the new restriction in DNS-O-Matic was only introduced around June 26/27. Before it was working, but OpenDNS state that this was a security flaw, which may be right.
Also, this idea is already in the ideabank. Vote for it!
This is the main one: http://ideabank.opendns.com/story.php?title=Have_DynDNS_Update_OpenDNS_IP-1

Thanks for the reply, shame it doesn't work now but at least I now know it is not me being dense!
I will certainly vote on this idea after this post; one quick question though will opendns run through settings ok on Vista because in light of the above I will now need to install it on my daughter's laptop and I don't want her to see it in the system tray. -
"will opendns run through settings ok on Vista"
I guess you mean the OpenDNS Updater. Yes, many people use it on Vista.
You should install and run it as a service. If you run it interactively, you can change the settings and also select to run it as service. You should then deactivate "Start with Windows", else it will run twice, as invisible service and visible in the systray.
Just for the sake of clarity: OpenDNS itself cannot be installed, it is not a program, but a service. It can only be configured. It is about the DNS server addresses setting up on either the router or the computer.
Only the OpenDNS Updater is an installable program. -

Yes, that was my typing error I meant OpenDNS Updater. I have version 1.3 on my own machine (XP3)at the moment I presume from what you say this will run ok as a service in Vista.
Thanks for the clarity, I have already altered my DNS settings on my router and set up the DDNS to DYNDNS.ORG (the second part now obviously not required) and OpenDNS works perfectly I was just trying to get it to update my dynamic ip directly from the router.
I have voted and will keep an eye on the forums.
Thanks again for the help it is much appreciated -
It seems you are good to go. Have fun!Thankful People: midwichcuckoo
