Getting a strange message trying to access Facebook this morning. As soon as I remove OpenDNS servers from DNS, it's fine.
Is there a problem? -
It is working fine here.
What type of strange message did you get?? -

Same here. I have my content filtering set to custom but the Social networking box is not checked. However when we go to facebook it says;
Site blocked. facebook.com is not allowed on this network.

Social networking
Questions? Not properly categorized? -
Another item is twitter. Also getting blocked even though I don't have the category blogs, selected in my content filter custom settings.
-
Where are people finding these content control settings? I've looked everywhere in settings and can't find any mention of this.

sounds like you are picking up somebody else's network settings.. -
@twynne
"Where are people finding these content control settings?"
Always in your OpenDNS dashboard. Found them now?
@joshuac
The assumption from @infinity306 is likely right.
Check that your dashboard IP address is in sync with your current IP address. -
Actually I think the filtering settings only show if you add a network, and I can't seem to add a network. I believe the problem occurs when I'm on mobile broadband. There must be some NAT involved, meaning my public IP is actually shared with other users. The *first* OpenDNS user to add that IP is probably able to, and my guess is that that individual enabled content control - thus causing everyone else at that IP (probably all Vodafone UK mobile broadband users) to be subject to that filtering.
Not sure how this can be resolved. Any thoughts? -
@twynne
"Actually I think the filtering settings only show if you add a network"
Indeed! You got it.
"I believe the problem occurs when I'm on mobile broadband."
Oops, yes, you should never use your OpenDNS network and settings in networks you do not own, of course. And anybody else shouldn't use his/her either, unless this is the administrator/owner of this network.
"my guess is that that individual enabled content control - thus causing everyone else..."
Yep, most likely. Therefore one should use this only in own networks.
"Not sure how this can be resolved. Any thoughts?"
Yes, open a support ticket at http://www.opendns.com/support/contact/ referencing the public IP address and telling OpenDNS that this belongs to a public shared network. They will exclude such IP addresses from being able to be added to an OpenDNS network.
For the time being and as a temporary workaround you may try to configure a different DNS service on your computer.Thankful People: twynne -

well Mobile Broadband could be his, as aircards(cellular internet) in the states are termed as Mobile Broadband, so he could be subscribing to it.. which would be his network provided by the Cel phone company I would beleive much as a ISP provides ip Addresses for their customers. -
@infinity306
Well spotted. I don't know the situation in the USA, but here in Europe the mobile broadband (UMTS) providers and even "normal" AOL often work with shared public IP addresses and NAT and such. Sharing of IP addresses at public hotspots and WiFi nodes is a fact either, as of their nature. -

Yes, true. It is something to be checked, as some give you your own IP, some do not.
"the problem occurs when I'm on mobile broadband"
Check with your mobile provider as to whether you are NATed or not. If so, let the ISP and OpenDNS know the situation. If you do get your own IP, see if you can get a new one dynamically, then add the mobile IP to your network. I am unsure, however, how to keep 2 IP addresses updated (mobile and home network) on the same system. I'd suggest that if you have your own miobile IP, and can set a network for this, keep it updated via your laptop. Use your router or another PC to keep your home network updated, and ensure the updater on the laptop is off when joining the home network (or other people's networks). -
He can use the WLAN filter of the Updater to achieve these selective updates. Otherwise, the Updater will update the network, which label matches the network name setting in the Updater.Thankful People: maintenance

Just to clarify, I was already aware that there was NAT in use on my mobile broadband (Voda UK) as I had once tried to remote desktop back to my machine only to find it was not possible.
What I *hadn't* considered was the impact that the shared IP would have on OpenDNS. I'm guessing the user that applied the filtering is actually unaware of the mess that results.Thankful People: maintenance -
Oh - one further point. There's little hope of getting the ISP to do or change anything to help. Their support is relatively useless. It's taken the last 6 weeks, for example, to convince them that they're blocking a port outbound and get them to sort it out (as of today it still doesn't work). If I weren't stuck in a contract I'd have moved on long ago!

Well, if the ISP is unwilling to support their service, or indeed, stop someone from essentially breaking their service for some users, please open a support ticket here. OpenDNS can keep NATed IP addresses from being used with OpenDNS.

Best of luck in getting this fixed soon!
