I am using the Internet connection at a hotel (Sheraton Broadway Plantation, 3301 Robert M. Grissom Parkway Myrtle Beach, SC 29577).

I brought my router (Netgear WNDR3300 with DD-WRT) with me and have everything set up to OpenDNS. I even have my Vista and Ubuntu computers setup using OpenDNS manually, but OpenDNS' welcome page keeps saying "Opps".

How do I force the use of OpenDNS?

It has been my experience that many of the larger hotel chains are performing dns redirection at their egress to the internet to their controlled dns servers. They do this mostly to correct for people that have statically encoded internal dns servers on their pc, so they do not have to change the setting to use the hotel's connection.

It looks like in your case this hotel is performing the dns redirection to their own servers. You are most likely out of luck.

Create an ssh tunnel to a home computer routing port 53 to the opendns dns ip.
Not elegant, but might work for you. :)

@piousminion, eh. Now, that's just going overboard.

A single command is overboard? :P
Oh well, I hope you get it sorted out.

Well, it is probably the only way you can use OpenDNS from your current location. Also, the safest way to surf from any hotspot.

@piousminion, I'm not talking about the command. I'm talking about having a home computer powered on while tunneling.
