    Greetings!

As promised, we are kicking off the open beta on a Dynamic IP Updater for Mac.

You may download the tool from http://www.opendns.com/download/mac/dynamicip

Since this is a beta test version, please provide us with feedback (whether it be positive or negative.)

I will update this post with feedback that has been accepted and put in the task queue.

    Thanks,
    Dima

Seems to have fair few omissions from 2.7:
    • No longer displays IP greyed-out in the menu bar contextual menu – one-click access to IP was nice.
    • Growl support removed?
    • Won't update IP if the computer that's running the app isn't with OpenDNS. Only some of my computers use OpenDNS as a parental filter.

    Thanks for the feedback mattrobs.

I'll ask about IP but not sure if growl is on the road.

Lastly, the updating IP for multiple computers - do you have them on separate IPs that are dynamic?

Like mattrobs, my IP always showed greyed-out in the menu bar of the old updater. The new updater required selecting "show status" in the drop down menu, to see any information. No objections to using the drop down menu - I like what displays. I have two networks running through OpenDNS, and I can easily switch back and forth now. Especially like the fact that it tells you "Using OpenDNS?" and "Last updated"

I don't use Growl support, so I can't comment on that part.

To have some computers using OpenDNS and some not - I put the OpenDNS server numbers in my router, then put my ISP's DNS numbers in the network settings of the two computers I do not want filtered. That makes it painless to have the updater running on a computer that is not being filtered.

Is there a way to run the apple updater on startup of an apple laptop?
    Also,
Is there a way to have the application not identify that it running?
    Thanks

since I downloaded, it doesn't filter anything more. And appears this message :"you are not allowed to..."

Anything else to the message, "you are not allowed to..." ? Where does this message appear?

Hi, the app works well for me, except it does not accept long passwords (mine was 12 characters and didn't work, now it's 8 and does).

I would really appreciate it if there were an option to not show the icon in the menu bar. I have so many icons already, it gets too crowded up there.

    Thanks!

Hello, I'm the developer of the OLD updater (2.7). I got the email with the notification about the new PC version of OpenDNS Updater and I decided to come see what people were saying about it. Only then did I notice that there was a new Mac version available as well. (kinda odd nobody even bothered to tell me) Anywho, I have feedback to share.

    1. I'm excited to see the project being moved in-house! When I first created the updater OpenDNS was nowhere near as large as it is now and it really deserves more development time than I can give it. Cheers to the new dev! (dkumets?) Please contact me any time so I can help get the project transitioned smoothly. Now that you have an official client, I don't need to worry about keeping mine around.

    2. Not having a Menubar item. I've received this request several times and the reason it's not really feasible (with the app as is) is because once the menubar icon is gone, there is no way to interact with the app to change settings, etc. The only ways I know how to remedy this would be to make OpenDNS Updater a pref pane, or to create some global hotkey that brings the prefs to the front (not ideal). Personally, I think making it a pref pane is a great idea. It would allow those people who want a menubar icon to have one, and the rest could turn it off. Unfortunately, I didn't have the dev skills to turn it into one, or I would have.

    3. Growl Support. Might as well put it in …it was my number one support request until I did.

    4. Built in DNS-O-Matic support. Same company, same username/password, it only makes sense to have it all in one updater. I was going to roll the two together whenever I had time, but it looks like that time isn't coming.

    5. OpenDNS rocks! Love the service guys, keep up the good work!

Any idea when this will be out of beta? I'm planning on using the auto software update mechanism in my latest version to update users to the official client when it comes out of beta. If the dev or anyone at OpenDNS has a problem with this, let me know.

Also, I have this app registered at MacUpdate, VersionTracker, and appbodega.com. I need to know if anyone here at OpenDNS is wanting to claim ownership of the app at those sites.

I'm getting an error while attempting to update. "The update is improperly signed." Is there something I can do for a remedy? Or is that a problem on your side?

I was running 2.7 and just tried out 3.0b6. The machine I run the updater on does NOT use OpenDNS for it's DNS servers. 3.0b6 shows "IP: Unavailable" in the menu and the "IP Address" field blank in the Status window.

One other item I noticed -- after running 3.0b6 I had a "Login Items" entry for BOTH OpenDNS Update 2.7 and OpenDNS Updater 3.0b6 in my Account options. Perhaps the 3.0 version should clean up the other Login Item automatically?

I want to apologize for the inconvenience.
There is a bug with the auto-update mechanism that causes this. We have since resolved the issue for future versions.

In the meantime, please quit the updater, download the latest version from http://www.opendns.com/download/mac/dynamicip and install it.

Thank you for your help and participation in the beta.

Just wanted to mention that I'm using OS X 10.6.1 and cannot get OpenDNS Updater v2.7 or v3.0b6 to work. For some reason it keeps saying my authentication is not valid (but I have confirmed it and re-input it multiple times). I'm using a complex password that is 10 alphanumeric characters long (upper & lowercase). The firewall on my Mac is disabled and I'm using a D-Link DIR-825 router. As a troubleshooting measure I tried placing my Mac in the DMZ of the router, but it made no difference. Ultimately I was able to get configure my router to send DNS-O-Matic IP updates so I won't need the client, but thought it might be helpful to share my issue.

To possibly isolate what the problem with the updates is, you can emulate such an update manually, while visiting the following URL with a browser:
(Without quotes. Replace your user ID, password and network label accordingly.)
The response should be "good xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" (your IP address).

    Here's a bug report:

Dynamic IP updates don't work when the Network Label contains any whitespace. OpenDNS Updater 3.0b6 probably fails to URL-encode whitespace. Updates fail silently, without the software reporting any errors. Changing the Network Label from "Some Thing" to "Something" restores IP update functionality.

This is not a bug. This field/information is normally used to denote the domain name (hostname) of the DDNS host in the DynDNS specs. Have you ever heard about a domain name with whitespaces?
However, you are right in some way. Both, the OpenDNS website and the Updater should not accept entering a network label containing whitespaces.

Well, of course it's a bug. Not reporting any errors when an update fails is most definitely a bug. Accepting whitespace where no whitespace should be allowed – if that is indeed the case – is a bug, too.

can't login using the 3.0 beta either (under Snow Leopard)

rotblitz--in your post above what's the "network label"?

actually i just put it in with just my username and password (and left NetworkLabel as such) and I got the good xxx.xx.etc. message)

but i can't actually login, with the exact same login info. what gives?

p.s. what's also annoying is i can't paste my password into the opendns form field, i have to type it manually (i know it's a beta).

Look out for "LABEL" at https://www.opendns.com/dashboard/settings/

    >>just my username and password (and left NetworkLabel as such) and I got the good xxx.xx.etc. message<<
If label is blank, in dashboard and updater, and you have only one network, then it's still fine.

"i can't paste my password into the opendns form field, i have to type it manually"
I believe this is a security measure, not a beta thing. I have observed this in many other cases in the last time. Malware may use the clipboard to introduce or obtain passwords, so it was consequent to force users typing it.

White spaces are allowed in my version of the app (2.7) …they are escaped to %20 and should have no problem working (unless something changed recently)

As far as network labels go, I'm not sure how it works in the new beta, but the url update mechanism does not require you to enter a network name unless you have created more than one.

OpenDNS Updater 2.7 (Mac) correctly gives my IP address but 3.0b7 leaves my IP address as blank. Further, the beta tells me I'm not even using OpenDNS — it displaces "No" in red. But that can't be right because my IP address is the same as in the OpenDNS dashboard, which shows my filtering level. This is all pretty geeky to me so probably I'm missing something, but I am mystified.

Thanks for that .. sorry I didn't get back sooner. Yes, I got an "Oops" — I had removed the OpenDNS IP numbers (forgetting that they were OpenDNS) recently while trouble-shooting our LAN. They are now back in place — and the LAN still works. More to the point I'm getting "Welcome to OpenDNS!" again.

    Thanks for your help!

Hi, what is the point of OpenDNS updater when the user can both see it and defeat it by turning it off? I use OpenDNS primarily as a content filtering service for my kids at home. They are smart kids, so I use a number of levels of blocking software to block inappropriate content. But with OpenDNS updater (if the other measures weren't in place), all they would need to do would be to quit OpenDNS updater from the task bar (no password required) and reboot the router to get a new IP. It makes the whole thing seem rather pointless.

Preferably the updater should run as an invisible service and it should require the administrators password to both run and quit it.

    Thanks.

Got into the office, and OpenDNS updater 2.7 is suddenly failing on my my work computer. It has always worked fine before. It is rejecting my username/password. I am on a Mac Pro running now Leopard with all updates. I would usually trash the preferences file for the app in a case like this, but cannot find any preference file.
