Seem there is a tracking bug connecting Opendns to Google.com. The google was installed with the new version which is placed in the startup. I uninstalled and
    question why this was done.

Do you mean you have static public IP addresses? You don't need an updater for dynamic IPs then!

"is meanwhile a proper way, to put OpenDNS into work with AVM"

You'd have to ask AVM if they redirect DNS queries. If not, it should work fine if you configure the nameserver addresses properly.

On Vista 64 bit, I get the openDNS updater window popping up every 10-15 minutes. Run hidden and hide window get rid of it for that occurence, but then ten-fifteen minutes later it appears again. There do not seem to be any settings to stop this happening- and it is extremely irritating... The only solution I have found is to exit and close the program- which kind of defeats the object.

Am running Windows Vista 64bit home edition, patched and up to date.

x64 should be ok, not sure about Win7. Just try it. Trying it can't cause troubles.

You are taking about internal LAN IP addresses, are you? This is related as apples to eggs. Strange that someone can associate these.

If you meant your public IP address being static, you would not get the idea to use an Updater at all, would you?

"Or do I just don't get the display?"
What display do you expect to appear?

"if there is meanwhile a proper way, to put OpenDNS into work with AVM... routers?"
Wasn't it working with AVM routers? I have two of them (T-Home brand), and it works.

If this happens, the Updater normally has to report an error or problem. What problem is reported in your case?

I am afraid that this is nothing to do with OpenDNS at all. As far as I know, OpenDNS do not have any business relationship with Google (but with Yahoo). Therefore your assumption that "The google was installed with the new version which is placed in the startup" is simply wrong. You must have got this Google thing (what exactly is it?) via other means. The Updater doesn't do this.

I'm having the same problem as kin242. Windows Vista SP2 32-bit. The updater window keeps popping up every so often. Sometimes, it will say that I am not using OpenDNS, sometimes it reports no errors.

When it says that I'm not using OpenDNS, I check my network settings and the two OpenDNS servers are listed, so I'm not sure what is going on.

"I'm not sure what is going on"
I think I know. The Updater raises a lookup to myip.opendns.com each minute (and sometimes more often) to prove:
    1. That your IP address hasn't changed in between.
    2. That you are still using OpenDNS at all.
Now, this DNS lookup may fail from time to time, i.e. it simply times out. Therefore the Updater thinks that you are no longer using OpenDNS and it pops up its window to make you aware of this.
As you can see, this is not much to do with "the two OpenDNS servers are listed", as this is not what the Updater checks.

The question remains, why does the DNS lookup to myip.opendns.com time out so often? One reason could be that OpenDNS is not prepared to handle the many requests caused by the Updater now...

As far as I can see, the v1 Updater checked the IP address against myip.dnsomatic.com, and only rarely against myip.opendns.com to see if OpenDNS was being used.

Edit: I was analyzing these timeouts more systematically and can state as follows:
Lookups (and pings) against resolver1.opendns.com [208.67.222.222] tend to time out relatively often, around each 10th, whereas resolver2.opendns.com [208.67.220.220] doesn't. If one may want to test and prove this: just change around the OpenDNS server addresses, 208.67.220.220 as primary and 208.67.222.222 as secondary, and the problem may disappear. Although OpenDNS state that the IP addresses and their order do not matter, there IS a difference, definitely.

Every minute (or less) seems like overkill. There should be an option to control the interval between lookups.

While this issue has nothing to do with "the two OpenDNS servers are listed", the error reported in the popup window states something along the lines of 'your computer is not using OpenDNS'. To your average computer user, that sounds like the problem is with their system and not a timeout at myip.opendns.com.

IMO, version 2 of OpenDNS Updater was released a little too soon. I don't see how this version is "a major step forward in stability, features and performance" as mentioned in the 2009 newsletter. There are fewer features and the stability and performance is questionable if servers are timing out.

@rotblitz: It is working on Windows 7 x64 fine.

And concerning the IPs, yes, stupid question maybe, I'm not that into it. I meant the internal LAN IPs. I thought maybe OpenDNS would relate to them as it is integrated locally with the client and - in my case - should be with the router...

The Speedport is indeed from T-Com, not from AVM as far as I know, but I'm not an expert for rebranded routers. ;) I'll just have to stress on AVM again...

The v1 Updater does never check myip.opendns.com to see if the user is using OpenDNS, it always and will always use which.opendns.com. myip.opendns.com is just queried to compare HTTP and DNS request IP.

In no way. You would not really like that your internal network structure is seen from outside, would you?

"The Speedport is indeed from T-Com, not from AVM as far as I know"
    Here you go: https://www.opendns.com/start/device/speedportw701v
This definitely works with W 501V and W 701V (I have those), and may work with other 500 and 700 models as well (which are not AVM, but Siemens).

Edit: Ah, I see. Are you looking for DDNS updates done by the router?
I could not find a solution for that yet. You would need to hack the router as descibed in a special forum (I don't want to mention it here) to be able to load it with whatever firmware (even self-made) you like.

I only want the updater so it can add shortcuts for LAN netbios names. I see I have to enable dynamic IP to use it though... and I have a static IP. I'd rather have the network set static, avoid unnecessary IP updates, but get the netbios names added automatically. Is this an option? Thanks.

As far as I understood, the Updater does this once during installation. So you just temporarily enable dynamic IP updates, install the Updater, leave it running for an hour or so, then uninstall it again, and disable dynamic IP updates again.
    How about that?
Because your IP address is static, it will not really change during that time.

Just wanted to let you know that I will not use the 2.0 version of the updater until there is an option to install as a service. With the previous version of the updater I would go through the trouble to set up the NT/ATHORITY task just so it would not show up in the sys tray, until the install as a service feature was added. The addition of the run as a service option was my favorite feature of the updater, followed closely by the option "Use OpenDNS on this computer" that set the DNS settings for you. The 2.0 version is ok I guess. the install is fairly snazzy, but not so improved over the .187 build to justify loosing the best features of the updater.

The ability to run the updater in the background without the knowledge of the enduser is critical for our operations in my office.

My request is to PLEASE give us the option to run the updater silently, and I mean no notifications of updates, error messages, no sys tray icon, ect. The next thing I hope you will consider is features that condense multiple steps into one click options like "Ues OpenDNS on this computer". Anything that speeds up the install process is greatly appreciated.

I think I am having the same problem. I am getting a pop-up window that tells me I am not using Open DNS, although I have been. I have to go to open up the hotlink that says something to the effect of "start using open DNS" which takes me to the original set up page. I do step one which sets my router (although I have done this before), then it takes me to step two "create account" -- although I already have an account and am signed in at this stage. It tells me I can ignore this step, and but I cannot skip over it to step three, and I don't need it since I've already done months ago and am signed with said account at this point. I've tried telling Open DNS that I may have a dynamic address, I've tried downloading the updating software, which says it is working and has updated within the last five minutes, but I am still getting this pop-up window intermittently and have had to reset the router two or three times since we changed internet providers in July. The first time made sense -- the IP address had changed -- but now it's disconnecting me at random and when I go in to reset all my information is the same -- my IP, my sign-in, everything. It just decides intermittently to turn off and not use Open DNS and I have to restart it each time. I have no idea what is triggering this... I haven't cleared my cache, so that isn't it.

How do I get it to quit signing me out?

mdsharpe: Yeah, that would make sense to me. I can only assume the devs felt they needed to alert users of problems somehow - how often do folks check logs? Since I've never seen a help file for any related software, I can only guess that a problem exists where you lose connectivity intermittently, or it is a code/settings issue.

The devs may see this, but you might want to prod them with a support ticket as well.

Edit: I've just seen this -
"One or more DNS lookups to myip.opendns.com may have timed out, so the Updater thinks you are not using OpenDNS."

How do I tell what build I'm using?
All it says in the title bar is version 2.1 and the 'About this program' link opens a web page that does not indicate the build. The executable's Properties says v 2.1.0.0, with no build information per se.

Anyway... in whatever build I'm running, the "IP updates history" is non-functional. I know I've changed IPs at least 5 times since the last time I rebooted this machine (my kyocera router is hard-coded to use some other provider in its DDNS screen, so I must use a software client instead), and in fact the main Updater window says it updated 1 hour 14 minutes ago, but the "IP Updates History" window is blank. I would think it should at least show my current IP even if I haven't changed IPs since starting.

    Thanks. :-)

Well, sorry if I can't satisfy you with a better reply, but that is all I've got. I only happen to know that others have reported a problem with logging, and that the issue was confirmed.

How not? You just need to update two Networks - one for each IP. The update for IP would have to be coming from the IP being updated. 2 IPs = 2 Networks = 2 IPs to update, each to its respective Network.

If they are static IPs, they don't need to be updated.

The answer to #geeknik's question is Yes and No. Yes OpenDNS can update multiple IP's but not the way you are trying to do it. It has to be done on each network like #maintenance said.

People buy these routers that use two different ISP's to load balance their network in places were they have slower broadband access. Unfortunately these devices flip flop your outbound IP address often and cause web connectivity issues. The only way to do what he wants to do is to put a computer or a router with DDNS between each ISP modem and the load balancing router. That way each IP can be updated to one OpenDNS account and use the same filtering.

...or just run two Updaters on two computers, one updating network label "A", and the other updating network label "B". Wow, can this work? It can! How? Think about it!

The final solution would be that the router (or routers) have a sufficiently intelligent DDNS feature already built it, as it is anyway the best choice to get this done on the router(s).
