    Good news!

    Netgear has released firmware for more routers that support Live Parental Controls powered by OpenDNS.

    Initial release
    * Wireless-N 300 Router, WNR2000
    Added 9/17/2009
    * Wireless-N 150 Router, WNR1000
    * Wireless-N 300 Router with DSL Modem, DGN2000
    * RangeMax Wireless-N Gigabit Router, WNR3500 v2
    (please note: it is important that the WNR3500 be a v2 model)

    I will continue to update this list as more of the Wireless-N routers are released.

    Information from my previous post:

    There are some feature differences you should be aware of if switching to Live Parental Controls (LPC) from our core OpenDNS service:
    * Using LPC eliminates the need for a dynamic IP update client using a new "Device ID". The router itself defines the network.
    * Bypass accounts - allows you to associate a Windows computer with a sub-account that has different filtering settings than the default/all network users.
    * Time based blocking - pretty self explanatory. This allows you to have different filtering rules based on local time
    * All DNS queries from behind the router will be routed to the OpenDNS/LPC server even if the computer is explicitly set to use a different DNS server.
    * LPC does not have statistics
    * LPC will allow you to use your OpenDNS login but will not use any of the settings you currently have
    * A separate dashboard has been created at http://netgear.opendns.com - if you have a NETGEAR router you will notice a link from the OpenDNS dashboard to the NETGEAR router specific dashboard

    Notes: currently the setup requires a Windows computer.

    Anybody know where you can buy a NWR3500V2 router? All I can find is the V1 and it don't support the Live Parental Controls. :cry:

    Thanks.

    dfmcse - At this point your best bet is to go to a brick and mortar Best Buy and check the box.

    How can one tell from the box that it is in fact a version 2 for the NWR3500? :cry:

    I've been to the brick & mortar Best Buy and talked to their on-line sales folks and they've explained they don't have the v2 yet. They are supposed to e-mail me when BestBuy has it available.

    As for how do you tell, look on the proof of purchase: NWR3500-100NAS is the v1 & NWR3500-200NAS is the v2. This comes from Netgear tech support.

    I'm probably looking at purchasing the NWR2000 unless I can find the 3500v2.

    Thanks for the feedback dkumets. This is a tad frustrating.

    dfmcse.....thanks no better luck for me from Amazon or buynetgear.com. FYI Amazon's return was easy buynetgear.com was less so (read that as awful. I'd buy the WNR2000, but I've been spoiled by gigabit.:sad:

    gvforman, I've got managed gigabit switches on my LAN & all my data transfers between LAN systems will be handled by those so . . . I should be okay. But I feel your pain.

    All, I now have a WNR2000 in place. This is actually the 2nd WNR2000 as the 1st was defective. But I hung in there, drove back to BestBuy & exchanged for another. #2 works fine, I've got Parental Controls up and going & things seem to be fine.

    Thanks for this -- you guys have clearly worked together with Netgear to create a great solution here.

    HOWEVER -- can you please work with Netgear to come up with a solution for Mac users? Currently, in order to initially configure their OpenDNS routers, you cannot be using Mac OS X. You can only configure their routers from a Windows PC only.

    Sure, we can purchase VMWare Fusion and Windows XP to install on our Macs, but that's a big expense just to enable this function of their routers one time only.

    And I am happy to say that we have no Windows using friends, either. I'm serious. It's just like that here in Los Angeles. :)

    Thanks,
    Scott

    I bought a DGN2000 modem/router to try and control my kids' access to time wasters when they're supposed to be doing their homework.

    I have a problem with the "Windows only" aspect of LPC. We have a mixture of devices at home, including 3 x Windows PCs, 2 x Macs, and 2 x iPod Touches. The bypass accounts work just fine on the Windows machines, but there is no client software for the Mac and iPods. That means that either:

    - The default settings need to be less secure, if the Macs and iPods are to access time wasters (such as Facebook etc.) at all. This means then that for Windows users, the bypass feature is redundant, as the bypass cannot increase the security, only reduce it.

    or

    - more secure default settings with useful bypasses for Windows users means that the Macs and iPods never get to access the time wasters, which is a bit mean spirited, as they're fun at the right times.

    Can the router handle multiple OpenDNS accounts, so that non-Windows devices can log in separately to OpenDNS, and have their own bypass settings?

    Could the router conceivably map MAC addresses on the network to OpenDNS bypass accounts? This would eliminate the need for client software on the client devices, as they all have unique MAC addresses.
