    1) Is there a demo or refund period if we sign up for deluxe?
I had slow web page access with the normal version and stopped using it.
Maybe with the ads removed it will be faster but would like to try it first
or least have a refund option.

    2) Why was malware site protection left out of the deluxe version
it seems that would be one of the most important reasons to subscribe?

    3) Not clear on user vs family price if the router has the opendns addresses would not all users at home have open dns?

    Thanks!

    1) "Is there a demo or refund period if we sign up for deluxe?"
As I understand from the webinar, the free version is the demo already. And with the low price of just annual $9.95 (a few cents per month), I do not think that they have foreseen refunds.

    3) "Not clear on user vs family price"
As I understand the matter, the family price is a discount. If you pay per user, you will have to register at least two users. They apparently do not foresee to register one user at the user price...

Edit: I just checked, the user price is from five users.

This really should have been included in the free version.

    Thanks for the replies.

Sure $10 is not alot but the
thing is OpenDNS used to as quick as my ISP,
but over the last year or so it slowed down to the point
other users here where asking why the web is so slow.

I changed back to the ISP servers
and the internet was instantly quick again.

Could the Deluxe version be faster than the free version
hate to spend $10 to find it is not
so I was hoping for a demo or refund option?

I doubt deluxe will be faster then the free version, since they both use the same Infrastructure I believe..

    My questions are:
    1) Does Deluxe integrate with the netgear Parental Control feature, or does the netgear stuff only use the free features (i'm really missing the "stats" from the netgear setup)
    2) Deluxe keeps logs for 1 year (as opposed to 2 weeks), but can it be made to keep more information per day (such as > 400 in the top domains reports)?

    1) The answer: http://forums.opendns.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=5218

    2) The current free version already has more than 400 (I've seen 12000 and more...).
There is a glitch in the program eventually displaying more. Go to the address line and replace /pageN by /pageN+1, e.g. /page6 by /page7, etc.

for what you get, its way too expensive for 50 users plus. We'd be looking at a $1000 a year!! I wouldn’t even pay that for the enterprise version!

kklambach - There is not a paid version of Netgear Live Parental Controls. Also, we do not restrict the number of domains listed in top domains. You should be able to click the next button to go through all your top doimains

    Also,
princesstv - The price for Deluxe is $9.95 for the special family pack or $5 per user per year. 50 users would cost you $250 per year. You'd have to have 200 users to get all the way up to $1000.

So how does OpenDNS tell the number of users? If someone types in the nameservers into their router, more than 5 people could use it but OpenDNS would never know. Or am I misunderstanding the meaning of "users?"

I would also like the term "users" clarified and explained how it will be used/implemented? Is this to allow different override codes and other administrative uses or is this the "users" on the network?

    Please clarify.

"You should be able to click the next button to go through all your top doimains".
Yes - on should. Sometimes the display stops one domain before, e.g. at 399 or 799 instead of 400 or 800, and then there is no "next" link. The trick described by me above can help then. However, some pages seem to time out and do not come back with a domain list, independent from the "next" link being existent. The page remains at "The stats robots are gathering your data..." then.

And yes, I also would be interested in a clear definition of "user" regarding DeLuxe and Enterprise.

By removing 'ads' does the Deluxe version allow us to specify our own catch-all page, or remove the Open DNS entirely, forwarding to what the browser is configured for.

This is the one thing that annoys me about open dns, and having just received the email overnight I would sign up in an instant if I could turn it off

    Here's the answer: http://forums.opendns.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=5227

"...forwarding to what the browser is configured for."
This is nothing to do with OpenDNS, as this is possible already. Apparently your browser is NOT configured for what you expect doing it. No reason to go for DeLuxe.

The free version has served us well. I'd I'd like to give something back, but the pricing is so way off, for a few extra features were looking at going from free to it costing $2k a year.

Counting by user seems ridiculous. We generally have 10 users in at the weekend, but this can go from anything like 50-200 during the week. Surely it should be based on the number of requests per month in various price bands.

The pricing should be a bit like bandwidth. You have an allocation and a system in place for going over your bandwidth. If you come in significantly under you get the option to scale down your plan. If you consistently go over you pay a little more or have features dropped like no Ads until the next months allocation kicks in.

A per user model just doesn’t work above 5 people:

    What defines a user?

Do we have to pay a user fee for the guy that users a computer 1 day a week?

I have 20 servers which make DNS requests all day and night. Are they users? Our email server though makes more DNS requests than the other 19 put together.

Why should someone with a caching DNS server pay the same as someone who doesn’t? We manage to make 3.5 Million requests a week with a caching DNS server but would pay the same amount for a company who doesn’t. We would make far less requests therefore less hits on your servers. That doesn’t seem fair.

I put in a sales request for the Enterprise version. Our company currently uses the free version. Under our one Account we have 64 Networks set up. The nice thing about that is that it's easy to manage and supper cheap, being how it's free and all. My question is, like so many of the others, what does the term users mean? Is a user a network? Or is a user a computer on the network? At $5 a network, that's $320 a year. Not terrible. But with an average of 5 computers per network that increases quite substantially to $1600 if we are talking per computer. And that's just the deluxe version. How much is the Enterprise version going to set us back, being that is the one we are really interested in. Still waiting for a call back from the sales dept. Just thought I would check here to see what the buzz was so far.

Ohh, and we add and subtract networks fairly often as we pickup and sell properties. That brings a new dimension to the question as to when we sell a property and pick up a new one do we need to purchase a license for the new network or could we just transfer the license over from the old to the new? Just a few of the questions I have lined up for the sales rep when they call. Which is, I hope, soon.

User= person using the service. end user. I'm Not sure how they would be able to track this though, seems like it'd be more on the honor system.. and without an offering that is tailored to the individual end user it seems weird to use this kind of pricing. especially with the people using Microsoft DNS Server to handle queries and pass internet queries to Opendns..I can see some services/applications that pricing per end user makes sense, but in the current form it doesn't seem to make much sense for Opendns. especially here, as we have around 12 users maybe, but on a given week half are out in the field with their laptops and not using Opendns..

    Re: Malware..
Described better in blog posting.. not missing from Basic/Deluxe.
Below is from blog posting by David
    ----------------------------------------------
"Second, there’s some confusion around the Malware Site Protection feature, as it relates to all versions of OpenDNS. Here’s what’s happening: We will continue to block Internet-scale bots and dangerous websites that spread malware in the Basic and Deluxe versions, just as we’ve done with Conficker and the recent Microsoft Zero Day Exploit. We call this Basic Botnet / Malware Protection. The Malware Site Protection feature is different and brand new, never before offered, and is included in OpenDNS Enterprise. Similarly, we have an expanded list of botnet command and control sites currently only available in the Enterprise version. It’s our hope to be able to offer this down the product line over time, but for now it’s limited to Enterprise."

I understand that if your offering the feature of add free service, a paid option is necessary, to replace the loss of revenue from the reduction in the value of ad space. But I have been satisfied and happy with the free version for a while now. As a medium size business, we are always looking for how we can get the most bang for our buck. You can't beat free. We are interested in the added features of the paid version, but not at the current price structure. I don't begrudge OpenDNS making a profit. But there is no way I could convince the accounting bean counters the added cost would be worth these added features. And so I am saddened. OpenDNS, I wish you well, and I hope the Deluxe and Enterprise versions do you well. As for our business, we will continue to use the free version. Thank you for not changing the free version.

Imagine if Amazon EC2 or hosting companies started to charge not by how much data was transferred but instead a flat rate fee on the number of IP address's or "users" the site was accessed by! lol
