I am / have been having trouble loading CNN .com in recent days. Looks like page will load but never get any content ...progress bar hangs at 90 %

Windows DNS forwarding to Open DNS...

    Anyone else having CNN issues?

    Colin.

    >>progress bar hangs at 90 %<<

In other words, it is not a DNS issue.

For what it's worth, I get a blank page with CNN. But I can see its source, which is a javascript telling my browser to display some advertising.

Clearly, nothing to do with DNS.

@Red Prince: Could that not mean that the domain for the javascript is being blocked? CNN uses various CDN's for files.

That domain is i.cdn.turner.com and it is not blocked on my system, as, for example, I can go to http://i.cdn.turner.com/cnn/.element/img/3.0/global/header/hdr-main.gif and see the CNN logo.

However, if I go to http://www.cnn.com/ it appears like nothing is there, but I have just noticed the scrollbar on the page, so scrolling down gets me to at least some content.

If I try it with IE (I normally use Opera), it does the same, plus it says there are errors on the page.

At one place the page says "Adfusion Error: We are very sorry for this inconvenience," which is rather funny as it apologizes for not being able to show me an ad!

At any rate, it looks like the problem is with the web site, not with DNS.

Strange, not sure what your problems are. For me cnn.com comes up, just tested with FF 3.5.x and IE 8. Yes IE 8 reports some JavaScript errors, that's all. And my local blocking measures kill/ignore/hide a lot of rubbish...
CNN's pages are full with rubbish, see just the title page:

So I figured it out. There's a MASSIVE flash ad (seriously...entire screen) that is being delivered from "speed.pointroll.com"

I allowed that domain and it solved all the issues.

if only Opendns had a way to determine if the DNS request was coming from a banner or from a direct request.. seems like the block page really doesnt work well when it is called by an ad on a page..

They have some logic in their handling, often recognizing whether the object is text based or an image or sound (one can see this from the referrer or file name extension - MIME type), but apparently not all cases are covered or can be covered via DNS with subsequent redirect.

I guess that explains it. Adware is one of the few categories I block. Though, it would seem, someone submitted an advertising domain as adware, which is incorrect. Not that I mind in this case.
