Domain Name System (DNS) troubles: Dsldevice.lan

    Normally I can access my router settings by entering http://dsldevice.lan/?be=0&l0=-1&l1=-1 in my browser. The router is a Thomson TG585 v7.

    When I enable the OpenDNS service, the particular URL cannot be opened and I cannot see the router settings.

    You did configure the OpenDNS server addresses on the computer? Sure, then this is normal, as you have taken your local name resolution away. You have a few options:
    1. Configure the OpenDNS server addresses on the router instead of the computer.
    2. Call your router by its IP address instead of its "name".
    3. Append a line to your hosts file like: 192.168.1.1 dsldevice.lan
    Any one of these will allow you to access your router again.

    I configured the OpenDNS server on my computer, because I don't know how to do it on the router. So, I guess option 1 is not possible for me.

    As for option 2, I don't know how to find my router's address.

    Option 3 is one I could try, assuming that 192.168.1.1 is appropriate.

    EDIT: I found my router's IP address. However, I would still like to see how I could configure the router for OpenDNS rather than the computer...

    time to dig out my old thomson/speedtouch instructions (so far have worked on a 510, 516v6, 530, 585v6 and a 780)

    Just do an "ipconfig" and get it from the "Default Gateway", or open the status window / details of your network connection.

    No, you must replace 192.168.1.1 by your router's IP address, of course. Everything else makes it impossible to reach your router by "dsldevice.lan".
    Hint: If you introduce a line like (always after "127.0.0.1 localhost"):
    192.168.1.1. dsldevice.lan darling idiot jukebox henry john
    then you can call your router by any one of those names. :cool:
