    Hi super DNS people.
Im not sure if i should even be posting here, but its possible you guys know the very answer to my problems after browsing your forums on some of the support issues. If im in the wrong place and you cannot help then I apologise for wasting your time. Hopefully OpenDNS will be a fix for me :)

I have a DNS error come up on my Win 7 Machine its been happening for months, countless calls to my ISP tell me theres nothing wrong at thier end.

This is Some of the errors I am getting in order and at the same time - which causes all my internet applications to disconnect and my modem/router to power cycle reset by itself.

    1. Name resolution for the name dns.msftncsi.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.

    2. Name resolution for the name www.msftncsi.com timed out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.

    3. The DNS proxy agent was unable to allocate 0 bytes of memory. This may indicate that the system is low on virtual memory, or that the memory manager has encountered an internal error.

    4. The browser has forced an election on network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{03B8A046-1B0E-4F98-A347-23D2E40DD9A0} because a master browser was stopped.

    5. DHCPv4 client service is stopped. ShutDown Flag value is 1

    6. The ICS_IPV6 failed to configure IPv6 stack.

    7. The DHCP allocator has disabled itself on IP address 169.254.53.179, since the IP address is outside the 192.168.137.0/255.255.255.0 scope from which addresses are being allocated to DHCP clients. To enable the DHCP allocator on this IP address, change the scope to include the IP address, or change the IP address to fall within the scope.

ok so i know i have put a lot here and some may not have anything to do with DNS at all, but im trying to post as much info as i can. I am going to be up for a few more hours now. its 3:45am atm im in Australia.

Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Also Any logs or info you want me to past in here I am more than happy to do so.

    Thanks in advance.

    Gstratto
Now these all happen at the same time.

This isn't DNS related at all. Your modem power cycling by itself means something is wrong with the modem. It probably needs to be replaced.

There could be more issues going on here than that. You should have someone who is qualified take a look.

Do all those messages appear on Windows, or some also on the router? Also, what make and model of router do you use? What I can see is that several things are misconfigured. And no, this does not seem to have much to do with DNS, probably not even with Windows, but with the user having configured it...
Best would be to post the full output of "ipconfig /all" here, and also some configuration parts of your router.

Ok, your router is propagating rubbish to your computer, because the router seems to be misconfigured. Login to your router's web interface (make always a note of the current settings before changing!):

    Setup > Host
    IP address: 10.1.1.1
    IP netmask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 10.1.1.1 (uncheck "Use WAN")

    Setup > DHCP
    DHCP Server: Enable
    Start IP Range: 10.1.1.51
    End IP Range: 10.1.1.114
Default Gateway: Self (if this does not work, specify 10.1.1.1)
DNS Server: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 (OpenDNS)
    Domain Name: (empty)

Then reboot your computer (and maybe your router) and try again. If it does not work, change the settings back as they were before. In any case, come back to report what happened.

In case you have no manual for your router, you find it here:

Ok set the router/modem to your settings.
It didnt have a place to specify an IP range so i didnt put that in anywhere.
But all the other settings are in.

No errors in Event Viewer yet, usually there would be some.
So i guess im on OPenDNS now :)

Will report back in the morning to see if its stopped the internet rebooting.

Thankyou again for the generous help.

OK - if you are going to use OpenDNS (of course, you should! ), make sure to create an account, add a Network, and install and run the OpenDNS Updater. There are a lot of nifty services available to you, if you'd like to use them, like domain filtering and stats.

    https://store.opendns.com/setup/
Walk through this. You already have the nameservers set, so you can click past those steps.

Good news, My PC has had its first night without a Disconnect :)
Thankyou so much dns peoples for your help.
I can conclude that this is solved.

As for the OpenDNS, I added in the dns servers into my modem/router so I have the settings, also I rebooted router and PC at the same time last night.
But when I go to the http://www.opendns.com/welcome i get the Oops page.

I cant reset my network for a while as I have relatives woking online and do not wish to be interrupted atm. I checked the badguys sit and it came up fine so its not blocked. Which means that I may not be fully on OpenDNS.

No, you are not using OpenDNS yet. Your device is really exotic, and problems have been reported:
    http://forums.opendns.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=3474
    http://forums.opendns.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=2436
You may want to go through these threads at some stage. It may help to get it better configured.
You currently have configured the OpenDNS servers on the LAN side of your device, but they may need to be configured on the WAN side. The LAN side then should DHCP-propagate the router's IP address (currently 10.1.1.1) as DNS server address to the clients. However, not sure about the latter, because I was not able to find out if the Speedstream can serve as DNS server and forwarder at all. I had to get such a device myself to find it out...

While I am slightly IT Savvy, this stuff it a bit out of my league.
Im not sure what I need to do to complete the OpenDNS Setup.

But as we configured the OpenDNS into my modem/router the other day all problems seemed to go away, but they are back :(

    Event Viewer Screenshot.

    I need help :(
I upped my Virtual memory to the specified 1.5x normal system mem amount. but I dont think that does anything. I keep getting all these DNS errors.

    any thoughts?

Stop the "DNS Client" service in the services control panel (services.msc) and see if your problem goes away. This service is not really needed. You can set the service to "Manual" startup then to prevent from further running it.

"I dont think that does anything." - That's correct, not related.

Do you have "Internet Connection Sharing" configured on this PC? It may be misconfigured, or something may have changed which has confused Windows.

Edit: Oo er, maybe it is just a Vista problem
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/itprovistanetworking/thread/54aeac92-497a-488a-b038-9f253a10cd66

If you do not use ICS, disable the service.
