I use ad-aware antispyware program from lavasoft. Since I started using the openDNS domain servers, the ad-aware is indicating an "error retrieving update" when I try to update the definitions in the program. I know this is caused by the DNS servers, because if I change them to my ISP's it works fine. Any suggestions?

I believe I saw this behavior in the distant past (2-3 years) and then again in the past month (since using OpenDNS).

I uninstalled, d/led, reinstalled. No update problem since.

Same problem. But since I wasn't running the "new" free version of Adaware, I decided to update to that first. After installing the new version, updates work again.

I see what is the problem.
When ad-aware asks for IP of host "download.lavasoft.de.edgesuite.net" it SHOULD get response of NX (domain not exists). Then it asks for "download.lavasoft.de" and it gets the response: 82.99.19.11.
But OpenDNS returns IP for guide.opendns.com instead of NX message, thus Ad-aware wants to get update from this server, and gets nothing.

Simple resolution of problem: add line

    82.99.19.11 download.lavasoft.de.edgesuite.net
    to your \windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file.
It doesn't require to download any newer version of Ad-aware than you already have.

BTW: ad-aware downloads from this server only file /public/personalwu.dat which contains (in cleartext) description of the newest update, and redirects to
    http://download.lavasoft.com/public/personal/defs.ref

yes, I am running exactly: 1.06r1, with update (as of today) SE1R202. It is free downloadable version (but not from lavasoft website, They have 2007 version which I don't like).
This is NOT version 2007 nor professional (payable) version.

I have noticed problems with not existent domains in work with other applications than ad-aware, and so far adding the entry in hosts file (the next hostname that should be queried) always resolved the problem.

just to note For Win2000 or XP Pro users directory for hosts file will be

    \winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file

    All the best, Phil
