Very frustrated that we just changed to AT&T Uverse. AT&T provided a 2Wire router. I cannot change the primary and secondary DNS numbers on the router. When I called the AT&T tech who installed, he said no other parents had ever asked this before. AT&T offers Parent Controls, but it has to be installed on each computer. I have kids and teenagers in and out of the house using our wireless internet. I want the security on the wireless router! Any help would be much appreciated! Lori

You should buy and configure your own router and not rely on your ISP to handle your internal network. Their service, and responsibility, stops at the modem. What you do after the modem (router etc) is your business, not theirs.

From my searching past messages posted here, it sounds like your AT&T cable TV and VOIP phone will break if you manage to change the DNS servers on the 2Wire. As Red Prince suggested, buy your own router, connect it to the 2Wire, and configure OpenDNS on your router.

    @ mgolden - Yes.

    @ mzloriclanton

You need to either put a router behind the 2Wire or configure the computers individually. (See above.)

    mzloriclanton,

You can certainly add your own wireless router connected to the 2Wire Gateway with ATTs U Verse internet service. I currently have U Verse and ran into this same dilemma. I purchased my own wireless router and using the 2Wire Gateway as a modem. I completed the installation by changing the primary and secondary DNS using OpenDNS on my new router. All internet traffic now goes through my new wireless router with OpenDNS. I have tested this service on all my 4 computers including my teenager's Apple iPod Touch. OpenDNS works on all devices. It was easy to set up. I also have teenagers that I did not want them to access porn sites. OpenDNS does an absolutely wonderful job of blocking undesirable sites. I like them so much that I signed up for the household plan for 10 dollars a year. I highly recommend them.

Try this following website that explains how to set up your U Verse service along with your own router:

If you have any further questions, please let us know. There a lot of helpful people on these forums.....Hope this helps....
